Singulair and insurance

My daughter's doctor put her on Singulair just about a week ago. She had a persistent barking cough that would not go away, even after 3 weeks on Albuterol. Because the pill was so expensive (even WITH insurance it was $120.00) and I could not afford it, her doctor gave me free samples. I gave it to her for the first time last night. I was telling a friend of mine about how nice it was that my daughter's doctor gave me free samples and what a blessing it was. When I told her what pill it was she started telling me about what happened to some of her kids in her class (she's a teacher). I was surprised. She told me she didn't want to scare me, she just wanted to make me aware. I didn't get scared, but I certainly wanted to find out if what she was telling me was common or just rare in a few cases. I am one of those people that will ask advice of other moms, etc., but ultimately do my own research and find out for myself to confirm any suspicions. I know some moms who freak out over every little thing and take someone's word for it, even without doing their own research. I am not one of those mom's. So I Googled "singulair side effects" and found this site. I could not believe that everything my friend had told me has also been experienced by so many others on this site. Needless to say, I will NOT be giving her Singulair anymore. I am just so thankful that I had someone tell me about it BEFORE she had to experience some of the terrible things that other children have had to experience. It is unacceptable that this drug is allowed to be prescribed, especially for young children. I am going to look into a more natural way to help ease her sniffles and cough.

I was surprised and shocked when I read all these stories about Singulair. I just purchased Singulair yesterday (no insurance--$100+) for my son who has had allergies and problems breathing. He took his first pill yesterday evening and early this morning he complained of severe stomach pains and diarrhea. I was perplexed as he didn't have anything to eat that would cause diarrhea. So I decided to type in 'Singulair diarrhea' in Google search and was surprised to find that my son is not alone. I am stopping this medication immediately. I'm just hoping the pharmacy will reimburse me because I had to save for this medication and I am a single mom of two.

I have been reading a book on anxiety and phobias,it says that the Gene # 23 is shorter for people pre dispositioned for anxiety,If this is the case it makes sense as this drug works genetically,,so i wonder the % of short 23 to long 23, and that would give Merck its % of adverse side effects...betting its more than they are saying.As far as the doctors still saying this is a small %,they are just not asking the right questions,The insurance companies should have a record on clients that filled prescriptions for singulair and anti depressants and adhd drugs.If we all cn figure it out in a week ,Well what does that say

I have posted a few times. My daughter started taking singulair 11-17-2003 and I stopped it 3-28-2008. She is the one that dropped out of dance and cheerleading, withdrew from old friends and family, headaches, stomachaches, missing school with this, depressed, anxiety attacks and CUTTING her self under her clothes. 6 months with a psychiatrist did not help. She is now about 80% back from the darkness. She is so much better and is such a loving child, She is not cutting, has a part time job, and has passed all her classes with 3 A's, 1 B, and 2 C's. BUT there are learned behaviors while in the darkness that still show up. Not every day but they are there. She has been pushed off her life path. I am hanging on to her with all my might and I know that I will get her through college and she will have the tools to be self reliant and happy BUT what could she have been if I never gave her singulair???? I can not help but feel guilty to what I have done to this child

My son has been on Singulair now 5 years and I am in the middle of fighting to get him off. My son is now 7 years old and has been diagnosed with allergies (no test have been done which I find very odd), which leads to a case of mild asthma. This past weekend his mother forgot his Singular on Friday so I could not give him any till the next day, where we met at his soccer game. Saturday night I gave him his usual pill and thankfully due to his exhaustion from playing out side all day he went to sleep in 10 min. vs 3 hrs later which is the norm since Singulair seems to jack him up.
He also has red puffiness under his eyes - most likely allergies.
Seems depressed - just driving down the road and I look at him in the rear view mirror and he just sits and stares into space. When I ask what's wrong he either says nothing or I am tired.
He will try to tell a story or think for himself and just stops mid sentence and says " never mind I am just confused"
He will be having fun one moment and just starts crying or gets depressed.
He was throwing a ball in the house (yes I know) and accidentally knocked a glass over breaking it - he went running to his room, crawled under his bed and sobbed profusely for over 30 min.
He has a hard time doing / focusing on homework - becomes bored very easily.
Does not want to go outside. I will take him to allot of cultural events/ hands on or participation events - he will not try anything. He is unsure and will not come out of his box so to speak.
I spoke with his doctor who was reluctant to take him off, but then agreed that if it was OK with the ex, to take him off for a week to see what happens.
The fun part: My ex is convinced that since he has been on Singulair for 5 years he is fine and does not need to come off it.

1.) Son is diagnosed with mild asthma or allergy induced asthma.
He has never had an allergy test done and has not had a lung function test in over a year.

2.) It is documented that our son has four outbreaks a year. (sounds like the changing of the seasons) but is given Singulair all year round and the dosage has also been increased.

3.) Since the court order, ordered my ex to enroll our son in sports (she would not let him play anything) he does not wheeze or cough uncontrollably.

4.) Since I had to battle to get our son on my insurance I have cut her control issues off a little, but she is refusing to take him off Singular just for a week to see how he reacts. Although I do agree that he should have some form of allergies medicine.

5.) When I found out about the side effects of Singulair, I also found that his doctor was getting ready to add two other allergy medicines to his portfolio - totaling 3 different meds.

I see our sons behavior getting worse and I watch him turn into something he is not and with a controlling individual not believing anything about the side effects it looks like I will have to rely on the medical system to prove my point. I do believe he needs to be accurately tested for allergies and given a regularly lung function test but most of all since he is now on my insurance, a second opinion and a 3rd to narrow down what the situation is and an alternative medical procedure that is fit for the symptoms.

I have 3 children on singulair they are 11,8 and 4. My 4 yr old started it when he was almost 1 when we found out he had asthma and the other two were put on it for allergies for about a year now. I have heard from my 4 yr old that his stomach hurts, he says it all the time, everyday I keep getting on to my 11 yr old telling her if she wouldnt say things like that he wouldnt hear it and repeat it. My 11 yr old has ADD and is on Ritlin.My 8 yr old is ADHD and has been on different Meds to figure out which is the best for him. He has been really depressed and so has my 11 yr old. I put both of them on anti-depressents. My 11 yr old had to be hospitalized in October of 07 for taking medications, anything she could get her hands on. I would find baby tylenol missing knowing I hadnt used it all.Then it was pain pills and muscle relaxers that I had put up from when I hurt my back. When I first found out what she was doing I locked everything up took her to see her Psychiatrist and her Psycologist and I was told by one of them not to worry It was her age that it was normal and basicaly blamed it on tv. I spent more time taking her to her doctors. I asked question with so many people on what to do I got nowhere. I finally found a hospital they took her for a week, her answer to taking the pills was if she took them then she would die and everything bad in her life would all go away. She was released before she could finish treatment because insurance wouldnt cover her stay inless it was outpatient. I couldnt find a place that would was close to do out patient so we stopped going. I finally found a doctor that treated everything her eatting disorder,nightmares,ithching,depression,moodiness,anger,stomach aches,crying and leg cramps, We have been going to these doctors and it has never helped. My 8 yr old has been mean, screaming at everyone crying all the time for no reason you ask him why he cries and all he can say is he doesnt know why. The crying is different than any other crying its not the same as when he gets into trouble or when he gets hurt, its just a very sad cry.He has OCD, seavere depression, ticks, anger, night mares and is very moody.He is never happy, he never smiles. Its really sad to see him like this and to not know why and what to do. My 4 yr old He has asthma that is why he was put on it. He used to get ear infections all the time, no sooner than he got over one, another one started. He is always saying his stomach hurts. I took him to the doctor she said nothing was wrong. He has been really mean I just always thought he see's his brother and sister acting this way so he learned it from them. He has been in Speech therapy since he was 2 and is finally doing better, I always thought because of the ear infections thats why his speech has been so bad, the school thought the same thing, he has been tested and and everything is normal so the infections have been to blame. He wont sleep in his own bed he is afraid we are going to leave him. I took them off of it and it has been about 7 days now and my 8 yr old has stopped crying, he is happy I dont have to get onto him for being mean, My 4 yr old has not complained about his stomach hurting. He has been nicer to his brother and sister. Its amazing at how there is such a big difference in them and I can only hope it will get better since it has only been a few days. I have pulled them off of there anti-depressents and they havent needed them. My son 10, has been on Singulair since he was 4 yrs old for Asthma and allergies. His last dose was 3/26/08. He has always been my emotional child, he is 2yrs older than this younger brother. Some of his side effects included headaches, stomaches, leg cramps, emotional breakdowns, major mood swings, crying outbursts over small situations, night sweats, lack of motivation, weight gain, ADHD, wishing he were dead and the list goes on. His younger brother has always been involved in sports but he was always too afraid he would get hurt. This medication has robbed my 10 yr old son from 6 yrs of his childhood. Since he has been off Singulair he feels motivated and looks forward to joining the football team his younger brother plays for. I look forward to meeting this new young man who for so long has been hiding behind this so called allergy medicine. I am so thankful to know that my son can look forward to a bright future without these side effects. God Bless you all who are going through this as well.

My daughter was prescribed singulair about six months ago when she was 4Yrs. old, after about a month on the medication she stated complaining about stomach pain, headaches, and refuses to eat. She recently started running high fevers at night and has been very emotional. The doctors only had great things to say about singulair,it makes me wonder if our childern's doctors may be getting some kind of financial incentive for prescribing these medications to our children.

WOW! I cant believe this, I happened to see the news this morning about the correlation between Singulair and suicide. After reading all the posts, I am amazed, how many stories describe my 13 year old son. He has been on Singulair since he was 5! We have gone thought he ADHD, BI Polar diagnoses, taking medications and therapy. Funny thing, once we stopped the meds for ADHD and Bi Polar, we did not see a difference in his behavior. We have just chalked it up to an emotional child. He has said since he was 5 that he wished he would die (hence starting therapy for depression) quick temper, loss of attention in school, leg pains (growing pains as I was told by the doctor) and the list goes on..... We just this week stopped the Singulair, hoping he has outgrown his childhood asthma and also due to loss of insurance, we could not afford it, and then this morning I see the news! It pains me that all these years I have spent trying to help my child with his emotional issues and it may be linked to a medication that helped him breathe. It is nice to know that so many others have the same problems and he is not the only one. I hope also that the effects are not permanent and the meds come out of his system quickly!

Oh and to it does work...I feel sorry for you. If the doctors knew everything than there wouldn't be such high malpractice insurance now would there. Be very cautious my friend god did not make doctors above making mistakes! We are only human, and do make mistakes. Trusting your doctor is great, but be a proactive educated patient at the same time! Sorry for the harshness but you need to be told!

This is all very interesting, but it's all anecdotal! Can you PROVE that Singulair is responsible for all this stuff?

What other meds are you all taking? In what doses? Under what conditions? Do you have a family history of ? Are you under stress? Or are at least SOME of you just hypochondriacs who, reading this stuff, say to yourself, "Say, I get headaches -- sure, it's gotta be the Singulair!" C'mon, now -- hair loss?!

I've been taking Singulair for over 10 months, and if I'd been as damaged as you all, I think I'd know it.

Without rigourous medical studies to show what is REALLY going on, you lot are just gossipping.

This site is obviously trolling for a class-action suit.
