As a pediatrician I write for singulair every day.
The medication is for allergies.
Allergies cause adenoidal swelling, which cause sleep disturbances which makes the child tired the next day with makes him over weight, less attentive, hyper and eventually act out.
This in turn makes the child experience parental, peers and teachers criticism/ abuse, with leads to the child feel inadequate, embarrassed, frustrated and eventually depressed and suicidal.
Yes, singulair does cause behavioral change but they appear within the first couple of peels, the rest is due to allergies, lack of medical care, i.e. sleep, singulair, and zyrtec deficiency.
Allergy shots cause 4 times the incidence of suicidally than singulair, and Ritalin 10 times more.
They say in hebrew "once a stone is thrown into a well, thousands of smart people won't find it".
Check it, it's true.

My daughter, 6, has been on this for awhile. I was very diligent in keeping her on it nightly (6 months). I was proud knowing that she had not gotten sick since she had started in July. Now that it is late January, I look back with mixed emotions knowing what other effects it has had on her.
Her teachers expressed that she seemed to have lost her spunk and sparkle. She seems depressed and in a zone. We have had many meetings with her teacher, nurse and a child psychologist. Wondering if she had ADD, ADHD, Sensory integration issues (she refused to wear just about everything), or something else unidentified. This normally gifted child was just not herself. I don't know what prompted me to stop giving her the drug, but I did. She is now coming "back to life" and I wonder when the side effects will be completely gone. I pray there are no long term effects. My lesson is to try to solve health problems by weighing the consequences in advance. Thanks to feedback on this forum I know we are not alone.

My son suffered from pneumonia at age 6 months till age 2. They had him on Flovent and Singulair from the age of 1. For as long as we can remember, he has been an aggressive, mean, bitter, angry child. The slightest thing would set him off. The doctors had just had him tested for tumors and cancers and other serious head related problems because he was constantly complaining of headaches. All tests came back normal. Then we heard that Singulair can cause ADD amongst many other side effects, including headaches. We took him off of Singulair and after only 2 days off of it he was a completely different little boy. He is happy and loving, calm and patient. He isn't dissolving in a fit of rage at the simplest thing. We can not believe the difference in how he is acting.
