Risperdal increases production of prolactin. That would explain lactation and reduced sex drive. So if you read that it doesn't affect sex drive, it may not but in some cases it very well my since increased prolactin decreases sex drive.

I took rispedal very small dosage 0,5mg per day, for anxiety along with Effexor XR 75mg. I took the risperdal for 2 months. I am still on Effexor. During the 2 months on Risperdal I had extreme HUGER, constant THIRST. This is a sign of blood sugar problems. I read Risperdal can lead to diabetes? I went off it, needless to say. This drug is usually prescribed for Schizophrenia in higher doses (8-16 mg per day I think). It shouldn't be taken for long periods of time for other purposes (for schiz. I am not sure).
Be careful with off-label prescriptions!

I lied about when I was taking risperdal. I took it from the end of 6th grade to before I started 11th grade. When I first started to take it, my weight sky rocketed. I went from being 140 to being 200 pounds in the first 6 months. After that, I went from being 200 to being 254 pounds in 10 months and then I reached my highest weight of 262 by March of 2003. It was a constant battle to get the weight off while being on risperdal and I stayed at 262 pounds until I started the 11th grade. That's when I was put on seroquel and taken off of risperdal. I am no longer taking risperdal or seroquel. I am now taking 5mg of Abilify and as of yesterday, I have lost 100 pounds in a year in a half. My weight today is 162. I use to wear a size 22-26 and today I wear a size 12-13/14. I love my new lifestyle of eating right and exercising and I never want to go back to being fat and lazy.

My daughter is a 14 year old mentally disabled child who will be 15 next week. She was prescribed Risperdal last month. Her doctor wanted her taking the lowest dosage ( 0.5 ). She's non-verbal. So to get you to understand her wants and needs she uses gestures. I noticed since she has been on the medication that she is always wanting to be held. Was very quiet. Sleeping a lot. She wasn't constipated like the others here have brought up, but she always had diarrhea. Was gaining a lot of weight as well. But it was what happened this morning that made me panic. When I was giving her a bath this morning I noticed that she had a white drip on her leg. I didn't think anything of it because it looked like the liquid bath soap. She gave me a hard time to take her out of the tub, so I put my arms around her from behind causing me to put pressure on both of her breasts. Milk shot out from both breasts. Of course as the mother who knows for a fact that her daughter is a virgin I began to panic. With the recent weight gain and the enlarging of her breasts, and now this, my mind began to think negatively. But from reading what I have so far here on this site I now see that it's happened to others and that it IS the medication.

I have Bipolar Disorder and was put on risperdal for 3 weeks. 3 weeks only! I had to be taken off of it. It was an amazing drug that really helped me with what I was going through, but it made me eat like crazy! It felt like I was a wild animal when food came around. I would smell someone elses food and be unable to resist the urge to eat soooo much or think about anything other than their plate. I got so embarrassed by the way I behaved when I was around food that I began to eat in private. They put me on ability now and I feel just as good as when I was on risperdal but now without the food problems.

I took this drug for 2 years. I was put on it the end of 6th grade and taken off of it in the 9th grade. I know I put on a significant amount of weight. I put on over 100 pounds in 9 months. I went from a size 14 to a size 26. My previous doctor took me off of it, because it was causing me to gain too much weight. At that moment, I gained so much weight, that I was starting to develop health related problems such as high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood sugar and high blood pressure. I was almost classified as "diabetic." in 2003, at 5'4" and 262 pounds, I had a BMI of 45. I was classified as "morbidly obese."

I was on Risperdal for 11 years. My psychiatrist put me on it because he told my parents I needed to be on it and I didn't have a choice. I was put on it to counter the Zoloft my parents finally made me take. I have painful muscle spasms I'm guessing from the Risperdal and if so will probably have them for the rest of my life. It seems almost inevitable you'll be disabled if you stay on Risperdal long.

I was taken off Seroquel immediately after having been taking it for several years. My psychiatric nurse said the dosage of Seroquel I was taking 100 mg at night was equivalent to a sleeping pill and not doing anything to stabilize my mood. I have only been taking 1 mg of Risperdal for 4 nights and I've been waking up suddenly at 4 a.m. My doctor told me to try taking 2 mg and again, I woke up at 4 a.m. for no reason. I always slept through the night with Seroquel but it was hard to wake up earlier than 9 a.m. I am able to go back to sleep for a few hours upon waking up at 4 a.m. and I only felt drugged when I increased the dosage to 2 mg. However, today (the 4th day) I feel very light hearted and dizzy. I don't know if it's the medication, sleep deprivation or getting off Seroquel so suddenly. I'm still having the same crazy dreams I had while on Seroquel, maybe worse. I have a feeling I'll gain weight on Risperdal unless I try hard not to snack.

I have been on risperdal for 12 years and it has improved my life greatly. I was a paranoid schizophrenic who was thin. I have gained more than 50 kgs but now on a diet which is losing it. I have experienced anxiety but it is far better than it was when I was sick. I have my life back again and am more social and happy. I am able to study and working is still a problem, as I have a little problem in learning new things and remembering and I am a lot less verbal and articulate than I was. It has slowed my thought processes down. I still get strange thoughts from time to time, and my dream activity has become very strange. It is like a sequel each night and the dreams seem real and with the same characters. It has made life interesting. I have also developed phobias and obsessions. Not sure if this is part of the illness or the side effects though. I have noticed I am much more calmer after the tablets than I was before and a lot less emotional. There are some things I have to work at but I have learnt how to overcome my fears gradually and work with them. Overall, I could not imagine my life without it. I tried to go off it and it was far worse as the illness came back again.

I had psychosis and the doctor prescribed Risperdal with lithium carbonate. It worked and stopped all the voices. Then all the side effects kicked in, constipation, trouble sleeping, restless (to the point that I can barely read a page of my work information at a time), losing my period, and headaches. I slowly tapered off the drugs for a couple of weeks, the headaches is not significant anymore and I wake up less frequently at night. I don't have racing thoughts nor strange voices nor moodiness or extremely mood swings. All I can say is, it is your body, do what you feel right. Also, I keep in my bag a bottle of Risperdal in case I started hearing things.

I take Risperdal for schizophrenia form and it made me have tremors two times. Now I'm still on it but also have Benztropine to counteract the side effects, works very well... hadn't experienced tremors since. I think this is a very good and powerful drug and it helps with paranoia too.

I was on risperdal for 2 years at 2 mg twice a day. I was put on it for an eating disorder and OCD. Interestingly enough my ED got worse, I didn't gain weight (I actually lost more weight) and my OCD was still there. It was only when I took myself off the meds at 16 did I get any better. I slept very heavy, waking up was so hard (especially at 6:30 in the morning for high school), and my personality was gone. I was a zombie. I did not feel sad, but did not feel happy either. I just was there. It was weird. I feel like I lost 2 years of my life on that drug I still hate my mother and doctor for putting me on it. I missed out on high school cause I was drugged up half the time. Thank god after two years I had the sense to take myself off the drug. Oh well. I am not completely condemning the drug. Perhaps it did not work for me because it was not meant to treat what I had. If it is working for you guys, great. but if you go on it and after a few months it is not working, then it is not going to work. Get off it and find something that is right to treat the problem you have. Good luck and beware. Doctors may have medical degrees (Im in college now to be a doctor) but only you know if what they are doing is helpful and right for you.

At 4mg/day, I am experiencing weight gain (finally slowed down though), I went from a size 3 to a size 9 in less than a year, my breasts grew (yay for that!), and they constantly discharge. I am also tired most of the time, and its real difficult to wake up. My motivation is just not anywhere to be found. And my sex drive? I haven't felt any desire since I've been on this drug, its gone totally. I don't like that part much because even though my sex drive was never really strong, at least I had one. But other than that, I guess the drug works.

my 16 and a half year old son was put on this medication because of his temper; however he sleeps excessively, does not have a problem with libido and is still as angry as he was before being put on this medication. His diagnosis had something to do with his oppositional attitude?? But isn't that fairly normal as well as common for a teenager who does not always get his way?? My ex husband had him put on this medication so that he would be easier to deal with. I want to get my son off of this drug. He is still taking wellbutrin which I dont believe has the same adverse long term affects. What do you think?? A concerned mom

I really have never had any weight problem. I bought a pair of jeans a month ago and they are tight on me. I don't think I am eating more than I used to. I think the Risperdal is the reason I am gaining weight. My breasts got bigger too and they are tender all the time. I feel like I'm pregnant sometimes due to the breast tenderness and swelling.

I have been on Risperdal for 5 years now. It has increased my prolactin alot which stops periods. I do get strange thoughts, some quite scarey. When I tried to cut down, I got very angry. I have lost weight over the past few months, I guess it is because I have been more active. I do get whoozy in the head, sometimes feel like I could black out kind of feeling. I don't weed the garden anymore as I feel like fainting when standing up from kneeling down. That is from low blood pressure I have been told. I don't think I can come off Risperdal as I am scared of the anger and I am more mentally stable.

Saliva increase and sexual decrease. Anxiety is now an issue as well, which causes stress, then leads to disorganization of behavior and thoughts. I might nead to get on more klonopin, because it seems that all Seriquel does is make me depressed instead of ease anxiety. I am also very sensitive to cigarettes, alcohal and anything else.

MY BOYFRIEND HAS BEEN ON RISPERDAL SINCE THE END OF NOV.. HE WAS MISDIAGNOSED AS HAVING SEVERE DEPRESSION WITH POST STRESS SYNDROME. AFTER SEVERAL VISITS TO THE HOSPITAL, HE FINALLY RECEIVED SOME POSITIVE HELP. HEWAS SENT TO A OUTPATIENT CLINIC, AND RE-DIAGNOSED. THE NEW DIAGNOSIS WAS BI-POLAR WITH PERSONALITY DISORDERS. AT THIS TIME HE IS NOW ON EFFEXOR 150MG, DEPAKOTE2000MG, ZYPREXA5MG, TRAZODONE50MG, AND BENZTROPINE1MG AND RISPERDAL1MG. I SEE SOME POSITIVE EFEECTS HOWEVER HE IS EXPERIENCING WEIGHT GAIN WHICH WAS NEED. AFTER READING SOME OF THE POSTINGS QUITE FRANKLY I AM AFRAID THIS CAN TURN INTO A NEGATIVE, BECAUSE HE DOES HAVE TROUBLE SLEEPING. GETTING TO SLEEP IS DIFFICULT AND WAKING UP IS EVEN MORE OF A PROBLEM. HE IS ALSO HAVING CONSTIPATION. CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF THIS SHOULD OCCUR FOR THIS AMOUNT OF TIME? IF THIS DRUG TAKES TIME HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO WORK EFFECTIVELY? HE WILL SEE HIS DR. WITHIN A COUPLE DAYS. IF ANYONE READS THIS AND HAS BEEN ON THE DRUG FOR ATLEAST SIX MONTHS CAN YOU PLEASE RESPOND TO ME WITH ANY HELPFUL INFO.

weight gain, stuffy nose, irritability, feelings like i can't express emotions clearly, extreme sedation, tunnel vision, leg pains, swollen eyelids. i admit that it has helped with mania and mixed epsiodes, but has not excluded it all together. my dr. swears by it, though. i'm really wondering if it's worth these side effects.

I gained 40 pounds on risperdal, but I could use it anyway since I was 6'0" and 140 pounds. I now weigh about 180.
Risperdal combined with zyprexa has worked 'eh' for psychosis. Some days it works, other days it does not. The worst side effect I have had yet from risperdal is sore nipples of all things. They are extremely sensitive to even putting a shirt on and god forbid I bang them, I go right through the roof. I can't wait to see my Pdoc, because I really want to get off risperdal.

Two of my female relatives have been given this medication. One a few years ago. Another has just been discharged from hospital. The most recent is why I had surfed the net looking for answers and found this site.

She is like the first is suffering from overweight, breast discharge. constipation etc.

The first time we managed to gradually cut down the dosage, but this took time. She had withdrawal symptoms complained of her heart pounding and a general feel feeling of nausea. I think the first step is feeling your ok and knowing you have to get off it. If you have the wherewithal to do that, its all down hill.

I had got mad with the doctor but his answer was, "Which is it to be, sickness or medicine? It seems to me that they could be a bit more careful with the dosage knowing the side effects and problems it will cause.
