Reglan and benadryl

It really is surprising that this drug is used. I had an episode when I was 18. My parents were out of town and I got a really bad migraine. I called them and they told me I should go to the emergency room. I went by myself and I don't remember what they gave me, but it must have been Reglan. With in minutes of the IV I got really nervous and agitated. I wanted to crawl out of my skin. I buzzed the nurse button like 3 times and after 10 minutes and no one came I panicked. I pulled the IV out and left the hospital. Crazy I know but I couldn't think clearly. I went home and after a few hours I was okay.

Well this brings me to 9 years later and to my most recent experience. I am pregnant and I got a really nasty migraine. I was puking, couldn't see out of my right eye. Since there wasn't anything I could take I called my OB. He told me I should go to the ER and so I went with my husband. They said they wanted to give me Reglan and Benadryl, since I didn't know that was what they gave my when I was 18 I said okay. With in minutes I was having the same reaction I did 9 years ago. I went nuts. I started freaking out. I told my husband I wanted to leave. I needed the IV out of me. My skin was itchy and burning. I was nervous, shaking, and having a hard time breathing. When I husband got the nurse she was really condescending. She was like, “Do you have a history panic attacks?” I said, "no." Then she got the Dr., who ordered more Benadryl. After about 15 more minutes I calmed down. This was an extremely unpleasant experience; I will never take this medicine again.

I took reglan in 1990 for the treatment of escophagitis (sorry if spelling is wrong). Had severe life threatening reaction (acute dystonic) and was rushed to hospital. Basically, it started the day after taking it. My face was stuck in a permanent Joker-like smile and it was painful. Thought I was going nuts, I was only 18 at the time, and then took another pill as prescribed. Later, my face stuck in an open mouth gaze position, I could not shut my mouth, it would spring right back open. Then, I lost my speech and spoke like a baby. At that point, my parents realized there was something seriously wrong (they had previously thought it was just me being nervous or something) and called the doctor. I was rushed to the hospital, and on the way I couldn't breathe. My bottom jaw shifted to the right, and my top jaw shifted to the left, and the pain was excruciating. I chipped my front tooth right off. My face was all twisted.

This went away after I was given Benadryl in the ER but I then developed the facial tic associated with Reglan, on the left side of my face. I am 36 years old now and a trial lawyer and singer who is always in the public eye. Luckily, the twitch is slight and only affects my left side, and mostly when I speak because it involves muscle movement. I was prescribed this drug 14 years before it was approved by the FDA. I would tell everyone I know never to take this drug, not even once. Its so dangerous and if I knew of the side effects I would have ever agreed to take it. Its very, very embarrassing to have this twitch. No one ever told me how dangerous this drug was. Hope this post may help someone. Thanks for reading.

My daughter just had surgery, and was getting Reglan with Benadryl through her IV. She requested no Benadryl with the last dose, because she didn't want to be sleepy when her sister came to visit. Suddenly, her jaw clenched and her eyes rolled to one side (she said she couldn't control her face) and she became panicky, and fearful that the doctors wouldn't let her go home. She thought she was having a stroke or a seizure. An injection of Benadryl helped her to calm down, but she experienced tingling at the base of her neck and "felt funny" for a few days after...Now we know why they give the two drugs together!

i was in the ER for what we thought was appendicitis. They hooked me up to the IV and within 2 minutes of the Reglan going into my body I started having a feeling of panic and terror I've never felt before in my life. I quick called my husband on the cell saying he need to come get me NOW! and I was so close to ripping the IV out of my arm, they had this blood pressure thing on my finger and the feeling of clautrophobia I had just from that and the IV being attached t ome was the most overwhelming paniced feeling I ever felt. Then, my whole body started uncontrollably convulsing. You can imagine how scary this was for both me and my husband, neither of us understood what was going on. The nurse gave me benadryl and the effects starting going away after about 10 minutes, at that point, my sanity started coming back and i literally could not stop smiling due to the relief I felt just coming back to normal. I still have panic feelings thinking back and remembering the experience. i can truly say it was horrific.

I had an agonizing migraine this Saturday, with all the usual delightful symptoms: pain, violent vomiting,... Went to the ER. After many hours I was hooked up to an IV with Tegretol (an anti-seizure med that's effective with migraine) and Reglan (for the nausea). Within a couple of minutes after the IV drip started I realized something was wrong. My migraine pain was actually increasing. I felt a desperate sense of being connected to this IV that was feeding me drugs whose effects were suddenly unexpected. Then things spiraled from there. I went into a panic. This sense of panic was unlike anything I have ever experienced in my life (and I've had my share of hospital horrors). I thought my heart was going to explode. Luckily my friend was next to me. I told him to get a nurse. I told the nurse frantically that I didn't know what was happening to me, I was freaking out, but I begged him to do something. He said I was probably having an "anxiety attack", which can happen with Reglan ("anxiety" sounds like a euphemism for what I was living through, but whatever...). He moved quickly, and hooked up some Benadryl to the IV. I also asked him to get me out of the dark, airless room I was in, as I felt like I was going to choke from the claustrophobia. Between the Benadryl (which apparently counters the panic effects of a Reglan reaction) and standing out in a spacious, well-lit hallway, I felt a couple of degrees removed from hell. I am 18 weeks pregnant and have been taking Reglan since i was about 6 or 7 weeks pregnant after being admitted for sever dehydration and hypermesis(i think the two are the same) I was having severe nausea and vomiting and couldn't keep water or food down and i was to the point where i didn't want to eat anything. This is my 3rd pregnancy and this is the longest that I had to deal with these symptoms. I was on phenergan anal suppository and Zofran which was supposed to stop the nausea and allow me to eat which at first it kept me sleeping. After i was admitted in high risk unit they gave me Reglan and took me off of the Zofran and phenegan and put me on potassium and reglan along with benadryl. Nothing has stopped the vomiting it has gone down but not subsided. I have been out of work and has advised the doctor that it isn't working and they still want me to take this pill. I don't think that it is safe to be on so many medications which my doctor wants me to take the zofran again. I am spiritual and there has been two many times where my meds have gone missing and i have been put in the position where i can't afford to buy more. i think it is a sign and i just keep having this bad feeling about the baby taking all these pills. My tongue numb sometimes. my sleep pattern is of i have fatigue at night and am tired through out the day. I am more paranoid than ever. I am going back to work and will just suffer the natural symptoms i have done with my other children. Taking prescription drugs during pregnancy is just not natural and i will not sacrafice my child for promise of only suppressed symptoms for my child any longer.

10 months ago, I went to the hospital with severe head pains, they gave me a iv and said they were giving me Reglan. My head paint went a way fast, I was feeling so much better then fifteen minns later they said I could go. I was standing out side waiting for my husband to come get me, I started feeling numb, shakey, couldnt breath. I thought I was having a stroke, I went back in and asked if this was normal? they said it was just making me tired and that i need to go to bed. So i get in the car and my husband started driving, we got no further then two blocks and I went into full blow sieazures, i couldnt move, talk, or anything I looked like a severe stroke patient, I got rushed back to the hospital and they gave me a cat skan, they said nothing was wrong with my head accept for i was making it up. my husband demanded something be done, they gave me benadryl and 45minns later it finaly started going away, I am still dealing with severe stiffness in my neck, and back. I get a tingling sensation in my head like needle pricks, and they said it was from the reglan, and that I could now suffer all my life from it.

I was given REGLAN in the ER because I had problems with something "stuck" in my stomach. I had a severe dystonic reaction...the scariest thing i've ever gone through. I was given benadryl later after I returned to the ER. The side effects reversed, but now it is January (4 months later) and I am stiff, achy, and sore and it never goes away. Please I am begging do NOT keep that drug on the market. I don't think I will ever be the same.

This drug was given to me along with toridol for a sinusitis attack. After fifteen minutes I screamed to have my IV taken out and began jogging around the room; not good since I had undergone back surgery two weeks prior. The nurse unhooked everything and said he had seen the same reaction that night with a similar case of migraine. He said it should wear off after fifteen minutes. Twenty minutes later the doctor came in and suggested that I have a shot of Benadryl to sleep. No sleep came. I have also experienced this reaction with compazine, except with compazine, I feel like I could run a marathon, but can't move. With Reglan, I run around and feel jumpy and insane. I came home that day and took more Benadryl. I walked laps around the mall. Still no change. Just waiting to get tired.

I went into the hospital for stomache pains. The nurse came over with an injection and said " this is a little some thing for the pain" I then asked what it was and her response was " it's sort of like pepcid ac" About 5 seconds after the needle was put in my arm i couldn't breathe, i started crying, couldn't talk and my body was uncontrollably shaking. I even had some trouble hearing. They gave me Benadryl to reverse the affect and it took almost 45 minutes for my body to calm down. Later learning about this drug I feel that giving it to me on that day was a severe measure, my pain wasn't unbearable it was pain that came and went .

During a recent acute headache episode, I was given a pain shot as well as an injection of Reglan, and then given Reglan 10 mg QID. After the injection, I began experiencing horrible restlessness and could not seem to sit still. While then progressing on to the oral medication, I soon began experiencing extremely painful muscle spasms throughout my body, as well as weakness, right eye twitching, neck spasms that radiated down the front and back-side of the neck and chest, trouble with swallowing, and developed near lockjaw, only speaking like a ventriloquist. I even thought I had developed tetanus from a recent thorn in my finger. Well, my symptoms were due to REGLAN and should this happen to anyone else, STOP the medication IMMEDIATELY and notify your physician. In my case, I am taking Benadryl to counteract the extrapyramidal side-effects/dystonia. My symptoms all occurred within days of the Reglan; the injection symptom of agitation was more of an immediate reaction that continued to occur with the oral form of medication.
