I had taken loestrin 24 for almost the whole month until my husband and I were convinced I was pregnant. I had been extremely nauseated, my sense of smell changed dramatically, exhausted all the time, not to mention how edgy I was. I truly thought we were going to have another baby. I stopped taking the pill 3 days early just bc I thought I was pregnant. I never started my period, normally if I had skipped a pill I would have started the next day, well, nearly 4 weeks later, I still haven't started. I have had 3 blood pregnancy tests done, all are negative. I have even had an ultrasound done. I know I will NEVER take Loestrin again. but as for my missing period, I have no answers. maybe you can help this "medical mystery?"

I get very sick when I get my period, they are long and heavy, and I have digestion problems and intense stomach pains for at least 1-2 weeks before and the week of. These symptoms disappeared for a while when I was on Apri (desogen) but after a few months, they came back, and on top of it, I became severely depressed and had such bad stomach pains, I went to the emergency room (and you pretty much have to drag me to hospitals).

This last period was so bad though that I finally decided to take the sample pack of Loestrin that my doctor gave me a month or two ago. Just a day after I started taking it, my period ended and the pain and bloating was gone. This is day 6 and I'm fine so far. On Ortho Tri-Cyclen (my first pill) I had bad side effects the first few days and gained ten pounds in two weeks.

I'm glad these forums exist, because they helped me realize that all of the depression (including suicidal thoughts), stomach pain, hair loss, etc. etc. were side effects of desogen. All of those things that contributed to the worst summer of my life disappeared as soon as I stopped taking it.

On the other hand, I have to point out that there is no "good" pill or "bad" pill. The side effects will be different for everyone. Some women need more estrogen, some need less. Some need fluctuating amounts of hormones and some need the same dosage all month. Unfortunately the only way to figure out what is right for you is to try them, note your reactions, and research the differences between pills. I realized quickly that I needed a low, stable dose of estrogen, which led me to try Loestrin. Not saying things can't go wrong from here, but now I am aware that if I fall into some depression, anxiety, weight gain, or other weird side effects, it *may* be caused by the pill I'm taking.

Is the pill worth it? Again, answers will vary depending on your lifestyle. Are your periods manageable or do they cause you not to be able to get out of bed in the morning? Are they consistent or are you praying you're no pregnant every month? Are condoms working for you or aren't they, and is the 2% chance of still becoming pregnant worth the risk?

While I've had bad experiences with some pills, I'm just grateful for this BC option in general. Until they figure out how to make birth control pills for men (pshh.. that'll be the day) then it's up to us to research and maek the best decisions for ourselves.

I am on my 5th pack of Loestrin 24. This is my first time on birth control. I was worried about weight gain b/c a lot of my friends on various pill have gained a bit. But I, however, have lost about 10 pounds since starting Loestrin. I have been very sick to my stomach and have had no appetite. My periods have been very irregular and have yet to have a period on the brown pills. I notice that I have been fatigued and moody. I went to the doctor and asked if this was normal. He gave the typical response..."there is no normal. Everyone reacts differently" speech. So he scheduled me for a ultrasound and blood-work to see if there is an underlying problem before we decide to go pill hopping. This isn't fun, but the other option ( ie an unwanted pregnancy ) is really not fun.

Four weeks ago; I had experienced severe throbbing in my lower back around my kidneys. I was almost preped for surgery when I had finally passed a kidney stone! I never had this problem before and since I have been on this BCP I have been experiencing - extreme mood swings/depression, numbness on my left arm, severe headaches, fatigue and the pain on my right side. I have had so many tests done recently because of the pain - no one knew what the problem was caused from. However, on a recent ultrasound I now have a large cyst on my left ovary! Does anyone know if BCP or Loestrin can cause cysts?

I am 46 and was given Loestrin to stop excessive bleeding for the past 4 weeks. Within days I had the most horrible cramps, back pain, heavy bleeding, emotional distress. Doctor wants to do an ablation or remove uterus. talk about distress. took me 10 days to realize my problems really began after taking Loestrin. I was about to undergo the ablation he was pushing for. (Which I've heard more terrible things about). Stopped the pills. Loaded up on vitamins and iron and within one day felt alive again. three days later the horrible cramps stopped and the bleeding is almost gone. Now I remember how much I hate prescription drugs. I will resist all forms of hormones, birth control pills and the like from now on. I was never one for heavy bleeding. I was told repeatedly that this is normal at your age. I still don't believe that one.

I had an awful experience with Loestrin24 FE. I am 33 and was prescribed it to regulate my cycle and ease severe PMS symptoms.

I had to quit Loestrin after only four pills, and it was enough time to cause a real mess. Besides experiencing the extremely angry mood, I developed a severe chest pain and shortness of breath. Also, my ankles became unbelievably swollen because of the fluid retention.

I ended up at the ER twice the same week, as I was thought to have developed a blood clot. A clot was ruled out, however the chest pain and shortness of breath lasted for about a month, until I was finally diagnosed with ASTHMA, which was believed to have been triggered or caused by the pills.

Whether I was already asthmatic and Loestrin just made it extremely worse or whether I developed asthma by taking Loestrin, NO WARNINGS ARE GIVEN TO ALREADY DIAGNOSED ASTHMA SUFFERERS, as other birth control products do.

Some of the symptoms were gone after I stopped taking them, but my health is definitely not the same after Loestrin.
