My mother is 74 and has been on Lipitor 5 mg for about 6 weeks now and has experienced her 1st TGA. She called me today to tell me that someone had come into her house and cooked a platter of bacon and moved a basket around. She couldn't find her purse and went outside and sure enough it was in her car, but the door was standing wide open and the purse was sitting on the seat. She remembers nothing! This evening she swore that our second child was born in a different house. This from a woman who can remember the tiniest minutia. This Lipitor is terrible stuff! She is now officially off of it. About eight years ago I felt heaviness in my chest along with some pain/discomfort when doing hard physical labor and occasionally in the hot-tub. Following my doctor’s advice and an angiogram, a stint was placed and medication administered – Lipitor and plavix I also went through a 6-month program for cardiac recovery including dietary changes and a proper exercise program. About six month following that I gradually just stopped taking my Lipitor and plavix and returned to my old eating routine and other life-style. I don’t smoke (never did) and don’t drink or otherwise indulge in any recreational drugs. I’ve never been hypertensive with blood pressures typically at 115/68. I maintain a trim and healthy appearing body just naturally or genetically. I eat lots of red meat, not a lot of vegetables, drink gallons of orange juice, and eat much more junk-food than I should. About six years after that (near heart attack) event I was given a “stress test” by my physician… I was then 61 and tested at the level of a 38 year old! Two years after that I had a significant heart attack out in the middle of nowhere! It took almost 6 hours to get me to an emergency room in Spokane, Washington (that’s a story of its own). That was on a Thursday – I was back to work full-time the following Monday (four days later). This time around with more drugs than I could swallow in one gulp! Lipitor, Plavix, Coumadin, aspirin, and carvedilol. The combination or amount was more than I could tolerate and I was weaned off all but the Lipitor and aspirin within a year. My heart has returned to nearly full-function and I have no physician imposed restrictions. All that said, I’ve been gradually developing muscle soreness (pain, actually) in my fore-arms and legs. I’ve been growing more lethargic and tired with each passing month. I’m now 65 and feel that the Lipitor is inhibiting my health… I want to get off it and be “normal” again. Or is it just being sixty five? Can I just quit taking the drug? Leaving only aspirin for blood thinning and the hope of a better diet for cholesterol control.

THE P.ORANGI REPORT
VERY VERY VERY ANGRY.
THE FOLLOWING IS AN abbreviated EXTRACT FROM MED SAFE NEW ZEALAND.
A watching brief for health professionals from the New zealand goverment's web site called MEDSAFE. I assume our equivalant of the FDA.
The centre for Adverse reactions Monitoring (CARM) is receiveing an increasing number of reports of psychiatric reactions occurring with statins, fibrates and ...ezetimibe. ...... aggressive behavior, memory impairment mood cognitive sleep and perception disorders. In Australia 9 cases of depression 3 cases of depressed mood ....... with ezetimibe use ..... onset happened within 4 days in 7 of the cases.

This reminder goes on to STATIN REMINDER to PRESCRIBERS of myopathy rhabdomyolysis and interactions.

In my small town this last week alone I have personally met 4 statin sufferer's. The last one yesterday was a charming wonderful 79 yr male, who could not see or hear properly, was aggressive to his wife and having hallucinations so severe in his words "I was to f'n scared to go to bed at night and wanted to leave (sell) his house. He stopped his medication (Fiblap 200 mgs) and the hallucinations stopped his other problems are improving.

It is now very obvious to logical people that not just statins but most cholesterol lowering medicines cause an extremely unacceptable amount of cruel dangerous adverse events. It is also very clear and almost undisputable by the statistical and very definitely UNDER reported number of these adverse effects that unnecessarily interfering with the body's cholesterol is extremely dangerous to all of us.

I can right at this moment show 3 middle aged men who are a complete danger on the road - their memories are completely shagged, they are agitated, not remembering simple landmarks and they are driving.

We have pilots in the air on this stuff, I would rather my pilot was on cannabis than this this shocking stuff.

Mr and Mrs prescribe it is you that are NOT reading the instructions it is you that are criminally negligent when the presentations are given to you and you fail as the safe process of elimination to cease this medication to your patients.

We the younger middle age are accepting of evolution, the trial, error and mistakes made in the pathway to achievement. Their is no shame in error, error in develpoment aids development and the end result.

BUT Messer's prescribes your negligence in failing to report adverse events, failing to take notice of your own government's warnings and consequently destroying the quality of life of society's grandparent's golden years is shameful and criminal and you can expect little sympathy as this debacle is inevitably exposed.

My own case in brief over a 5 year period shut down my weeze pooze and manhood. Gave me excruciating pain in every joint muscle and spasming eyeballs. Rashes, itching, muscle spasms, tremors. Insanity stopping a car and smashing my walking stick over the roof with a lady inside, hearing voices and stalking the house with an axe, being sexually suggestive to elderly lady customer, abusing customers, wife mother and friends. Driving with no recollection of towns I'd been through. Leg muscle cramps that dropped me. Decrease eye sight and hearing, when swallowing the food going down the wrong pipe. Unable to speak coherently, crying, hugging people in a special needs manner, selling my cars (2) for fear of failure of a warrant of fitness. An unnecessary hip replacement, that had me on a crutch for 6 months and 18 months later still severely limping and unable to lie on the THR side (weaken muscle). I swallowed almost 3000 pills in a 6 month period. Terrifying hallucinations, sweats that soak the bed. Completely unable to think, unable to print my own name, unable to remember neighbors names etc etc etc. Burst out in a totally deranged fit of laughter in a solicitor's face in the swimming pool changing shed. Obscene language in places where I never in my life used before To scared to go to bed at night for hallucinations and my heart stopping. Unable to keep up with my 6 yr old mate on our push bikes Almost 12 months since ceasing statins I have All the same problems though substantially reduced, I still need oxycontin, predisone coq10 fish oil. I am embarrassed about going out because of what I have done and because I'm still scared about what will come out of my mouth. I still blackout and "whiteout" (I know what is around me but I can't speak) I still have micro hallucinations and loose touch with reality.

DRUG COMPANIES, you have bought us fantastic medicines thank you. We know with development there are inevitable failures so why not own up do not cover up. The oxycontin makers and their directors were fined in the millions for their misrepresentions and they weren't giving a "safe preventitve" drug to airline pilots that are now known to cause mental impairment.

CHILDREN of the elderly, check your parents overall health, memory agitation aches and pains etc since starting cholesterol lowering medicine. Check whatever and all symptoms they have suffered since starting cholesterol lowering medication. If you are suspicious respectfully ask your doctor if your parent as a process of elimination can cease the medication for a while. Two major hassles are 1) We are not aware these adverse effects are happening to us or we may blame another cause, old age etc 2) Like me there is no way I was prepared to stop my medication, even though i knew I was dying, until I got my "TRUSTED" doctor's ok. I would never interfere with my mums meds.

TO OUR DOCTORS in our society, dog people, school groups, all clubs, trades, lawyers and even sick p*****s all have access to a data base of events that interest them but you don't. In todays easy communication society with a computer on your desk your are unable to readily access current helpful information. Shame on you.

TO MY DOCTOR, Over 3 years I complained of severe upper leg muscle cramps that made me squeal and dropped me, I complained of excess tiredness, I complained of loss of muscle power, you witnessed me in a trance in your surgery, you witnessed me 6 months on a crutch after a THR, you witnessed me with notes in your surgery (memory), you witnessed me loose my ability to talk and humor properly. I caught you red handed on several occasions not reading lab results and letters from other health professionals, you witnessed, stood up behind your desk and took off my hunched ape like stance. You completely ignored at least 2 med safe warnings I asked you for an apology you held your bunched fist in my face in your surgery and told me I was an ungrateful c&*t and to get another doctor. I wrote to you in my deranged state offering you forgiveness and hoping for medical help, you ignored that letter. When I started "sobering up" 6 months later I called you and told you of my insanity whilst under the influence of statins. You told me to tell another doctor or a medical specialist. I told you I would publish these events - you told me to go ahead. Doctor . . . . . my wife and I did not only like and respect you, I had a very grateful "love" for you and your staff. When I asked you for an apology and wrote to you, had you been reasonable and a little sympathetic to my life threatening condition, I would have warmly embraced you, forgiven you and been grateful that others would be safe. When I phoned you several months later, had you have been humane, though difficult, I would have done my best by you and society. Doctor ..... you had 3 very sincere approaches that you declined. Well bud do I know of others or not? Audit all your patients for their safety now. You told me to publish, well Doctor . . . .you may now become internationally famous. Do you think I will put a complaint to the Health and Disability commissioner where they will on proof order an apology - I don't think so, you have had 3 genuine chances for an apology. Did you report my severe adverse event to CARM? Doctor . . . . . I do not think this is conduct "unbecoming" I think it may be crime.

I sincerely wish I had never become "responsible" for my health. Given this web site, the victims I personally know, my own tragic events with statins, I now firmly, sanely and sensibly believe that JIM BEAM BOURBON and ROLL YOUR OWN CIGGIES are far more deserving of a heart foundation tick than statins.

This medications web site has saved the quality of life and indeed the lives of many people. Please take the time on the contact us to send our friends at medications an email with 4 wordS only " THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH"

Signed Mr P. O.

PS To the police and lawyers in NSW Australia where the tragedy of the fellow who chopped his wife and grandchildren took place, please check whether he was on this medicine. My heart goes out to him and his family

PPS I DO NOT UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES wish to be contacted by anyone, with the sole exception of any authority, whose sole purpose is to benefit mankind, over this matter only, I wish to rebuild 5 traumatic years of painful destruction quietly with my family.

PPPS Any pilots in any country please forward this site and medsafe nz to your medical examiners.

PPPPS Prescribers COQ10, ubiquinol not the cheaper ubiquone, oxycontin, prednisone, large quantities of fish oil, vit C, time and patience are the only things that have been of aid. After almost 2 years on oxycontin, I have no hankling for it, I have built a resistance to it and I am now trying miniscule amounts of cannibis (I am filthy angry that I have been put in this situation) to replace the oxycontin. The fish oil calmed my agitation, the coq10 reduced pain by about 20% increased energy by about 20% 3 x 100 mgs a day, The fish oil and coq10 together stopped all irregular heartbeats showing in my BP meter. The vitamin c 6 x 1000 mgs through the day within days put pressure back to the urine and aided bowel movements.

Hi I started taking Lipitor when I was about 41 and gradually noticed a big toe becoming numb. Then later another toe became numb. I had just started swimming about this time with fins and thought at first it may have been caused by them. But then I stopped swimming and the numbness continued. I visited a Neurologist a couple of years ago who tested for everything and found some peripheral nerve damage to the feet. I said the only thing I could think of was Lipitor. He said here was no conclusive evidence it causes this but explained how nerves are made of Lipids and lipitor limits the production of lipids. I stopped taking it but later my GP said I need to go on something for my cholesterol. He put me on Crestor. I took a Lipitor the other week and my toes tingled that night. So I am convinced it is Lipitor. I am not sure how to reverse the damage though.

Bobby you are so right "BIG Pharama" and thank you for your well researched comments that you post.
BUT let's not forget big pharma whom I do hate over this issue does state a lot of the adverse side effects on the labels.
SO MR and MRS DOCTOR why don't you read the instructions and advise us of what to watch out for. I told my doctor over a 3 year period of leg cramps that made me squeal and physically dropped me, I also told him over 3 years that my swimming speed overnight dropped by 25% which I now know is a dangerous condition called loss of muscle power. In the end I went to him knowing I was dying, I could only shuffle not walk straight and my whole body was hunched like an ape, people in the street were looking at me. My speech was slurry. This clown who was previously highly respected and revered by myself and wife asked me if I had a low pain threshold, he stood up behind his desk imitated my ape like shuffle then told me to stand up and walk straight. So in my mind there are 2 very clear issues.
1) The big pharma criminal scam.
2) The doctors failing to be safe, read instructions and think for themselves.

I'm in New Zealand a couple of months ago a 69 yr old fellow in Australia with an axe chopped up his wife and grandchildren killing them. A neighbor said they were an ordinary family and the man had become deeply withdrawn.
I stopped a car in the middle of the street and attacked it with my walking stick, I heard "voices" and stalked my house at night with an axe in my hand.

Go to space doctor DOT net and type in Allen Woodley suicide. There are 3 examples here where people lost their minds and took their own lives through statins.

We the "small" people have to originally put the pressure and file the complaints against the doctors then they can resist the pharmas.

No I am getting my faculties back make no mistake I will be filing a police complaint of criminal negligence.

Get the instructions and front the doctor after all he/she is the "retailer" and they can take it up with their "wholesaler"

These b#$%^&&ds are not only wrecking us but they are demonstrably negligently and criminally wrecking the lives of society's grandparents whose golden years we must protect.

Incidentally when I asked my doctor in January for an apology he rammed his bunched fist in my face in his surgery and said how dare you doubt my ability as a doctor. Not bad some of these clowns.

Then of course as we who have been forced to research ourselves we all now know that cholesterol and elevated cholesterol as we get older is absolutely essential for longevity.

These practitioners are totally unbelievable.

Join the push to BAN STATINS as these drugs have caused more harm to mankind than terrorism. Educate your friends. family and co-workers. Get the word out. The tide is turning and the time is NOW. Learn the truth about cholesterol and heart disease. The deception by big pharma is coming to an end. You can save lives by speaking up and sharing.

No hearing loss in family history. Doctor put my father on 80 mg Lipitor, 1-1/2 years latter he started having trouble hearing. I was taking 40 mg Lipitor after 2 years my left ear went bad, 9 months latter my right ear went bad the same exact way. The ears went bad with a tinny sound to all when the hearing came back the 3 kHz area was very low. I have just put this together the recently. This is not a coincidence, I am sure Lipitor caused this. I also think this caused me to go through Hell from hard bump break outs on my body, had me spend thousands hunting for a parasite that was not there. It was not a rash, small bumps with a hard center.

To send a report to the FDA about Lipitor and the many side effects, go to www.fda.gov/medwatch. Hopefully, if enough people will complain about this dangerous drug, the FDA will ban it and it will be off the market.

I am wondering if the plantar foot pain that my husband is suffering for 6 months could be from lipitor that he is taking for several years now. Has anyone have this problem?

I am a 65 year old female taking 20mlg of lipitor for almost 10 years. All of a sudden I started having severe pain, shaking and weakness in the calf muscle. The pain is unbearable. Doctors after doctors including a cardiologist, rhoumatologist and internist don't know the reason. I have stopped lipitor for 3 days. I cry and pray to god to help me everyday. I cannot exercise which is my passion for many years. I am hoping the lipitor is the reason and not something else. I have to wait and see. But I suspect it is.
SR
I do have nausea, depression and low back pain and arthritis and frequent headaches.

Went off simvastatin in March, all pain went away within a couple of months, but muscle weakness in legs remained. In October, found out my cholesterol is sky high, over 325. So Dr. wanted to try Crestor 5 mg. Within 1 week, I had overwhelming fatigue, could hardly stay awake during the day and the weakness in my legs was getting worse. So I just went off Crestor. Frustrating!!

Get off the Lipitor, me and me husband, both had the severe joint pain. The pain moved from one joint to the next. It would be in the shoulder, then the next day or so, it would move to our feet, then to the hand and wrist. It would swell , so bad, that it felt like, that part of the body was going to burst !!! My husband was on LIPITOR for 1 1/2 years, before it hit him. Doctors thought it was gout, and my husband was walking on a walker ,at 49 years old, and never being unhealthy. I was on LIPITOR for only one month, after a stint was put in my heart. Believe me, it is not the stint , it is the LIPITOR. I knew what it was when it got in my joints, so I went off it right away. It still takes about 2 weeks to get it out of your system. I now know of other people, who are on LIPITOR, that have severe muscle cramps. If this is happening to you, then you can not take anything with STATINS , in it. If you are allergic to STATINS, it can cause another muscle disorder , that can destroy your muscle tissue.

Just checking in again. Wrote about my dad,(Feb. 08 and May 1st) 77 yo white male, had been on Lipitor 7 years. After my mom passed away I got involved with his health. Read so much about the side effect of Lipitor - finally convinced him to GET OFF LIPITOR ASAP- he has been off since Feb. 4, 2008 and is getting back to where he should be. About 85-90% better than he was last year. It is a shame that my he and my mom were not able to do things last summer because he felt so bad. (He had muscle aches, spasms in his wrists, joint aches, bad nightmares, tossing and turning. Although he was also being treated for arthritis, his blood and xray showed none!) PLEASE take the first step and get off this drug - call your pharmacist if you are not sure, tell them your side effects. It will take awhile to get back to your old self - but my dad is proof that it will get better. Weput him on Fish oil supplements and CoQ10 - all natural - not medication and over the counter.
Have also taken him for acupuncture for his arthritis and he is seeing great improvement with this in only 6 visits AND NO DRUGS, he was surprised by the results. Please consider an alternative to drugs and medications.

I am asking a question on behalf of my brother. He had a stent inserted about 5 years ago due to blockage in one artery. The doctor put him on 20mg Lipitor and Plavix. Ever since then he has been getting Afib. Twice he has had to go to the hospital to get his heart back in rythm and other times he's able to get it back on his own. He has cut back to 10mg Lipitor and takes 100 mg COQ10. Has anyone else had Afib with Lipitor? He seems to think it's the stent causing it and I'm convinced it's the Lipitor. By the way, his cholesterol was not high, only his triglycerides. Thanks for any input.

I'm not sure my symptoms are the result of Lipitor, but I sure am going to find out by stopping taking Lipitor for a week. My symptoms - the numbing of my left foot, the reduction of motor skills in the left foot - it comes quickly and stops almost right away. I have been on Lipitor for several years taking 20 mg but recently was increased to 40 mg. I have no other
symptoms. Just touching base. Thanks for the site.

started 10 mg in 1998. was controlling everything ok. In 2004 developed weakness in both legs, started slurring words and eye trouble, went to several doctors then in April 2005 had to quit work as I was just to weak. That was at age 54. Finally a neurologist diagnosed me with Myasthenia gravis, and lambert eatons myasthenic syndrome. Had my thymus gland removed, which is supposed to put disease in remission, also had small cell lung cancer surgery at same time. improvement did not come and the drugs for myasthenia only made me sick. started having chest pains and doctors ,.found several blockages in my heart ,still do as to weak for surgery, cardiologist took me off of lipitor and I seem to have stabilized, still have trouble with short term memory, and vision, and really weak

I have extreme thumb spasms, often both thumbs at the same time. i had an episode a few weeks ago of a severe pain in my hip running down my leg. I was in bed all weekend as a result and needed a cortisone shot to help relieve the pain. I forgot a name right after they tell me and I am only 50 years old. I lose my balance and sometimes almost fall and have vertigo every now and then. I wonder if all these symptoms are from lipitor. I have been on it for at least 3 years.

I commenced Lipitor 14 years ago at age 47. At that time I was a regular tennis player, walker and generally fit for my age. No problem with Lipitor for the first couple of years until I began to experience hip and low back pain. My GP diagnosed arthritis. Gradually became worse and I started to gather injuries (over stretched ligament in right knee which refused to heal, plantar fasciitis twice) My back pain became far worse, I persevered with tennis believing that exercise would help. I began to "trip" on the carpet and going up stairs (foot drop). I was sent for a CT scan in 2002 which showed spondylolisthesis and root canal stenosisss. On advice from doctor I stopped tennis. Referred to a neurosurgeon who after several months carried out a laminectomy in July 03. Cleared to recommence exercise in December 03 which is when my nightmare commenced. I developed bursitis in one hip, stopped walking until it settled, then excruciating pain in feet, and then bursitis in the other hip and continuing foot pain. I developed rib/back pain, again diagnosed as arthritis even though I felt the pain was muscular. I had one session of aqua aerobics and woke the next morning with plantar fasciitis which continued for 3 months even with doctor, physio and acupuncture treatment. I was then referred to a Spots Medicine Dr who ordered bone scans/x-rays which revealed a stress fracture in my foot. In 2006 I began to notice that my right arm had a tense feeling all the time, I had a loss of dexterity in my right hand which assumed a claw like appearance and my normally neat handwriting became practically illegible. My physio recommended I see a Rheumatologist who said I had "no more arthritis than I would see in any 62 yo", he sent me to a Neurologist who after 5 mins diagnosed Parkinson's Disease. Within 7 weeks of commencing the PD medication I was experiencing Restless Leg Syndrome every night. The neurologist said that my condition had "progressed" and increased the medication - twice. I was then getting RLS DAY AND NIGHT and getting no relief OR SLEEP!!! Finally after 12 months misery my GP suggested that I try coming off Lipitor to see if that was causing my body pain. Within 6 days I felt better, my muscles became less stiff and relax. I went back to my Neurologist who refused to accept my claims, he insists I still have atypical PD (because I do not have tremors). I told him the cure is worse than the complaint and against his advice I weaned myself off PD medication and Lipitor. It was hard going but I NO LONGER SUFFER FROM RLS AND MY DEXTERITY IS SLOWLY IMPROVING. I still have dexterity problems with my right fingers but the tense feeling in my right arm has gone and my "claw" hand is starting to relax My muscles feel bruised all the time. I am still taking my blood pressure tablets and 150mg of Co-Q10 a day. I have been off Lipitor 9 months. It has been a painful journed for the last 8 years and a nightmare for 12 months. My GP has marked my records as "allergy to statins" but says she just doesn't know if I have Parkinson's. I know that I will never take this awful drug again. My cholesterol has skyrocketed but I will have to try and lower it naturally and take the risk. I constantly feel like I have worked too long and hard in the garden, all my muscles are so sore. I really need to know if this damage is permanent and if this drug has caused Parkinson's Disease itself or just PD like symptoms. I guess I will just have to wait and see. I don't think doctor's believe us when we say Lipitor is doing damage to thousands of people. They love it!! When we are aging we are not surprised to get diagnosed with arthritis and this is why we take this medication unwittingly for so long.

I have been on 20 mg Lipitor for years, and as I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis, all my symptoms have been blamed on that. I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and put on Lyrica because of the muscle aches and depression. My lower back, hurt in a car accident when I was 17 years old, had gotten so much worse that I had 12 steroid shots in my lower spine a couple of years ago. They didn't help my back at all, but my blood sugar went from normal to diabetic levels, and I am now on Byetta to try to lower it.
I am a 56 year old woman who was the math specialist in a school district until last December when I had to retire early. My back pain was so severe that I could no longer go from school to school carting materials. I could barely make it from the parking lot to my office. Mentally I was not ready to retire, but physically, I was (and am) a wreck. I have severe muscle pain in my shoulders, sometimes one or the other, but always present. I have tingling in my right hand, especially in my fingertips, and have trouble gripping and drop things easily. In the last few months the pain in my right thigh and calf has gotten unbearable. I thought at first it was sciatica, but I have had sciatica before, and this isn't the same, although there is tingling, burning , but the pins and needles is so deep in the muscles I have just sat and cried, or wanted to scream. I have wished I could just cut my leg off. And...I am on some pretty heavy duty pain killers for the RA: a small dose of prednisone plus Enbrel, Methotrexate, and Vicodin, and this pain is cutting right through all these meds. I get severe headaches, I went off Lipitor for 5 days and seemed a little better, but then went back on, and it came back.
Since I no longer work, I sleep longer, am exhausted ALL the time, have terrible mental fog, am clumsy, cannot stand for more than a minute or so without wanting to scream, cannot walk more than a few yards...just getting to the car is an ordeal. I tell people that I can only shop in shoe stores and furniture stores...the only stores with places to sit down.
I no longer cook or clean, cannot play with my granddaughter, even holding a book to read can be too much, and I love reading. I feel I am just dying bit by bit as I lose parts of myself.
My doctor is really into lowering cholesterol, and has put me on Zetia in the past few months...and it has been in this time that the pain in my leg has gotten unbearable. He wants my cholesterol to be between 50-60, and has said that the Zetia along with the Lipitor will do that. Is this normal or in any way reasonable??? I am having a full blood workup done tomorrow morning, and I want to go off the Lipitor starting the day after.
I came across this web site tonight while looking up Lipitor side effects, and I am shocked. I have so many of these symptoms, and there are so many I had no knowledge of at all. I knew about the muscle aches, but that's all. I hope someone can help me with what supplements and vitamins I should be taking. I started taking CoQ10 a month or so ago. What else should I be taking for my health? I know vitamin C and fish oil, but don't know how much or anything else. Right now I am just stunned with the thought that all of these problems that have left me unhappily retired, exhausted and in constant pain can all be caused from a drug I have been taking to help me be healthier.

If you take lipitor, you will be interested in this.

I have taken it upon myself to do my own studies into cholesterol and heart disease. I painstakingly studied various countries comparing rates of heart disease to cholesterol levels in each country.

From the Data, I can honestly say that I find no relationship between total serum cholesterol and heart disease. More surprising is the data showing higher cholesterol levels associated with less disease and longevity.

Just started today with 40 mg dose of Sortis (Swiss-branded Lipitor).
60-90 minutes later, I am very dizzy, sweating, funny taste in mouth.

I am done... no more. My cholesterol is normal, but recommended as complementary treatment with Glucophage, as I am very slightly diabetic.

I am still spaced out as I write this note. Called the MD to tell him that I the one dose is all that will enter my body.

Being a scientist, I am reluctant to say my symptoms are completely due to the statin (Crestor) that I've been on for 2.5 yrs. Started with a bulging/herniated disk in my lumbar region 4 months ago. Then increasing leg pain and major leg/foot cramping at night. Had my blood checked for electrolytes and CPK. Electrolytes were ok but elevated CPK (muscle breakdown enzyme). Doc took me off Crestor and now a month later, no cramping and much reduced leg pain. Am going in for a cholesterol check next week to see what the levels are. I wonder how much the Crestor played in my herniated disk. Certainly it has played a role in the leg pain and cramping as I no longer have it to the same degree. The FDA and surgeon general talk about putting everyone on statins. BIG MISTAKE!!!! Maybe CoQ helps, but I am done with statins.

I WORK WITH AN ARCHITECTURAL SOFTWARE DESIGN AND BILLING SOFTWARE. 1 MONTH AFTER I STARTED LIPITOR I STARTED TO FORGET THINGS LIKE CODES THAT I WORK WITH EVERY DAY AND BY THE SECOND MONTH I ALMOST LOST MY JOB WITH AN EVER INCREASING NUMBER OF MENTAL BLUNDERS AND VERY SERIOUS AND YET SILLY MISTAKES. ON MY WIFE'S (NOT MY DOCTOR WHO STILL DOESN'T ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM) ADVICE I QUIT TAKING IT. 6 MONTHS LATER I AM FINE AND THANKS TO THE PATIENCE OF MY BOSS I KEPT MY JOB. BUT I DEFINITELY HAD A MEMORY LOSS THAT WAS ALMOST DEBILITATING. IT IS ONLY AN OPINION, BUT I THINK BECAUSE THE MAJORITY OF USERS ARE OLDER THE MEMORY PROBLEMS ARE CHALKED UP TO OLD AGE AND NOT THE DRUG. IF I WERE NOT IN A DEMANDING MENTAL JOB I PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE NOTICED IT.

To send a report to the FDA about Lipitor and the side effects, go to ****** Hopefully, if enough people will complain about this dangerous drug, the FDA will ban it and it will be off the market.

husband and brother in law both diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. dear friend's husband diagnosed with Parkinson's 3 months later . all had been on lipitor for 2-4 yrs. brother in law has died--diagnosis changed prior to death from Parkinson's to Parkinson's with lewy bodies, to Lewy body dementia to frontotemporal lobe dementia (despite NO family history of this disease entity). there are SO many metabolic substrates whose pathways are interrupted by statins--pathways to isoprenoid metabolism resulting in among many other results, a decrease in glutathione reductase; a decrease in production of coenzyme Q10; decrease in dolichol, the lipid consittuting the largest % of fats making up the substantia nigra in the brain (area diseased in Parkinson's ). and lipids constitute the substance that makes up the mylein sheath surrounding nerves, and the largest % of the dry weight content of the brain.
Tremors were the first symptoms. then non swinging arm while walking, flat affect, rigidity of muscles. all symptoms of Parkinson's...

My co worker 's husband was diagnosed with chest pain and heart disease two months ago. They inserted two stents.
They also started him on statins and other cardiac medicines.
Yesterday he went for a walk and came back home and suddenly dropped dead. The cardiologist said it wasn't heart related.
I remember reading how those stents were killing people. I am sure those statins didn't help either.

Moderately high cholesterol and BP 150/90. Was put on Lipitor 20mg and after a week felt more fatigued than usual but nothing much more than this. Had stress test and angiogram which showed 60-70% block in one artery as well as arrhythmia. Cardiologist bumped Lipitor up to 80 mg which I took for 2 weeks. But by then I was suffering most of the effects described in these postings: aches and pains, giddiness, nausea, extreme weakness and fatigue. I took myself off Lipitor and even after one day my head started to clear aches started to diminish, though urine still a reddish color suggesting a lot more flushing out required. And, best of all, the arrhythmia reduced from moderate/severe to mild (which it always used to be before taking Lipitor). This drug is not for me. I'd rather take my chances without it and rely on strict diet, weight loss, etc. It is surprising that the possible side effects are so understated in the manufacturer's descriptions.

Eight years ago I started with 10 mg. Lipitor and took it without problems for about five years. Doctor wanted me to change to Crestor and within four months I could hardly walk, shuffled my feet and had pain in muscles. Switched back to Lipitor two years ago and this week began to experience muscle pain so I stopped taking it three days ago. Any time I am in a prone position, or sitting, the leg pain is incredible. Walking there is minimal discomfort. Tried a massage today to no avail. Any way to alleviate this withdrawal reaction, if not, when might it dissipate?

I recently lost about 25 lbs and decided after about 8 years of 10 mg of lipitor, to go off of it, cold turkey. I consulted both my MD and my pharmacist about whether or not I should wean, and both declined.

I now feel that my sweats, hot flashes are out of control. I am so hot and tired. I feel as though I cannot do the daily functions that I am responsible for.

I truly had NO side effects that I know of ON the drug. I just figured I'd see how I do now that I lost some weight. I wonder if going OFF lipitor is dangerous?

If anyone knows, please reply!

Thank you!

Three years ago, my Doctor said he wanted my cholesterol lowered. He prescribed Lipitor 10 m every other day.. Last year Cat Scan revealed a clogged minor artery so doctor increased to 20m PER day.. Test results proved Cholesterol down to " perfect" said the doctors BUT the rest of me was falling apart.. Severe muscle cramps in both legs, fatigue, muscles all over had no strength, weakness, nausea, headaches etc.. My cousin who is a doctor had been taking Lipitor herself but stopped because of the above symptoms.. Both my Cardiologist and internist have told me to stop taking Lipitor for a period of time to see if these symptoms dissipate.. After three days I already feel better. I have begun to eat 100% healthy: taking vitamins: vitamin C, Omega 3,6,9. lecithin & exercise, etc. And praying a lot..

I am a 60 yr. old woman and was on simvastatin for several years before I realized that all of my aches, pains, and muscle weakness could be because of it. I stopped taking it in March, and had very little improvement until June when I started taking 100 mg CoQ10 twice a day. I am now pretty much pain free but the muscles in my thighs are still very weak, and I am still very fatigued. Anybody have any suggestions?

Besides hair loss, vision problems, pain all the time, dry mouth, diarrhea, sleeplessness, pounding heart, I also had a problem with mucus filling my stomach and my food would get stuck. So I had to vomit to get the mucus up so I can continue eating. The first time I quite taking this poison pill, I got to feeling much better and my stomach got much better too. But never connected Lipitor with my problems. When I started taking this poison pill again, all my problems returned. But only worse, because I was in so much pain that it was hard for me to climb stairs and I had to hold on to everything just to go to the bathroom at night. Than I quit taking this poison pill again and haven't taken anymore since. All my problems disappeared again. I told my new doctor what this poison pill was doing and he told me to stop taking it, which I had already done.

So how many more people is this poison pill going to hurt and kill before Lipitor is taken off the market? I'm once again seeing Lipitor advertised on TV claiming this poison pill is FDA approved. Wasn't Baycol approved by the FDA as well and was taken off the market because it was too dangerous?Scary!

I was on Lipitor for less than a week 2 years ago and the muscle pains were so bad that moving my head was painful. I called the doctor's office and was instructed to stop taking the medication; which I did and felt 'back to normal' within a few days. I haven't had my cholesterol checked since that time, or if I did before surgery, no one mentioned anything negative about it. However 6 weeks ago I had a heart attack. Apparently my cholesterol was twice what it should it have been, and my potassium was incredibly low. So I'm now on Lipitor (standard procedure after having a heart attack and high cholesterol seen as the cause of it) to ensure that another blockage does not occur.

The only problem is I'm now bloated even though I've changed my diet drastically (no more junk food or soft drinks, no 'white' flour products, no dairy products with more than 5% M.F and lots of veggies and fruits). I've lost 3 or 4 pounds but my pants are too tight around my waist, and now I have a my upper abdomen bulges over the waistline. Besides that, I get muscle 'kinks' in very places and after sitting for more than 10 minutes I limp when I take the first few steps.

People have told me to 'keep taking Lipitor and Plavix' but exercise more. The only problem with that is that I have a brain aneurysm and the neurosurgeons don't think it can be operated on 'without it being a very high risk procedure'. The first one ruptured 10 years ago and since then I've managed to control my blood pressure. However the meds I took for that was what lead to my potassium being so low that my electrolytes were imbalanced. That combination of low potassium and high cholesterol is what lead to the heart attack.

I'm 54 and feel as though I'm losing control of 'how' I feel. Between Lipitor, Plavix and diuretics and medication for hypertension I'm not sure if it's one drug in particular that's making me 'ache, limp and look like a blimp' or if it's because of the interaction of all of them. How do I decide 'what' to stop? What's more important to look after first - my heart or my brain?

Class-Action Lawsuit Challenges Pfizer's DTC Ad Claim of Lipitor's Effectiveness in Reducing Cholesterol Levels, Wall Street Journal Reports
29 Sep 2005

A lawsuit filed by consumer advocates in U.S. District Court in Boston alleges that Pfizer marketed the cholesterol drug Lipitor to women and the elderly without proof that Lipitor reduces the risk of heart disease in those groups, the Wall Street Journal reports. The plaintiffs -- which include advocacy group Health Care for All and health plans for a New Jersey Teamsters union local, a Brooklyn woman and an elderly Massachusetts man -- allege that Pfizer's sales and marketing campaigns focused on cholesterol reduction and suggested that the medication protects against heart disease. However, there is a lack of proof that Lipitor's effect on cholesterol protects against heart attacks and strokes in women and the elderly with no prior history of the diseases, according to the suit. It also alleges that the company's marketing campaigns violated state consumer protection laws against unfair and deceptive trade practices. The plaintiffs state that although studies show the medication is helpful in lowering cholesterol in men with a high risk of cardiovascular disease, no such proof exists for women or the elderly. The groups are seeking compensation for women and the elderly who paid for Lipitor and insurance companies that paid for the medication on their behalf. A Pfizer spokesperson declined to comment on the suit, saying that the company had not been served, the Journal reports (Hensley, Wall Street Journal, 9/29).

After bypass surgery 10 years ago my doctor put me on lipitor and I've been on it ever since, numerous times I told my doctor that I was tired all the time acheing in my shoulders,he never once took me off lipitor,I found out just a week ago that statens are very dangerous, that if you are on them you should be taking coq10 to replace the cell damage statens have caused.
Ask your doctor why he hasn't told you about coq10.
I quit lipitor on my own,and feel so much better.Believe me take coq10 gel caps, this 65 year old is a believer in this.

I was a competitive runner with a number of sub 3 hour marathons under my belt before I was prescribed statins for elevated cholesterol 2 years ago. The first go round was 40mg zocor but muscle soreness and loss of strength started within 2 months. Switched to NIASPAN but couldn't tolerate it. The last 7 months have been on 10mg of Lipitor and now have intense pain in my legs, soreness in my wrist and thumb and swollen feet. I can still run but much less than before and much slower. I regularly go to the gym but have seen a steady decrease in the amount of weight I am able to lift. I have a blood test in a couple of days and will be looking for myalgia again. I have discontinued the statin and don't plan to start again. I was healthier before the DR decided to "help" me with my cholesterol problem.

15 years ago, at the age of 35, I had a major heart attack. After testing, the doctors decided I needed a quadruple bi-pass operation, followed by Lipitor, among other things. I was taking 20mg (the doctor ordered 40mg), but due to financial reasons I took only half. Everything was just great for 15 years. During a routine annual physical this year, my doctor noticed that my liver enzymes were off the chart high. He immediately had me discontinue the Liptor, but stay on all of my other medications. One month later, my liver enzymes were normal, and so was everything else; however, my cholesterol had climbed to 204, and I eat no meat, eggs, or other dairy products. They say my liver damage is permanent. Having had 4 lumbar surgeries and 1 cervical surgery to fuse disks in my spine, I have always attributed my back and other muscle pains to that. Now that I have been of the Lipitor for 3 months, I have not noticed in decrease in pain in these areas.

38 Y/O male with severe back pain on the upper left side just between the shoulder blade and spine. I was taking lipitor over 2 years ago and experienced the same problem. I never figured it was the lipitor and took several trips to the dr and chiropractor. When my cholesterol dropped below 150 I stopped taking the 40mg of lipitor but never told my doctor. All pain in my back stopped. Back in June of this year he insisted I go back on the lipitor and less than 1 month later the pain returned. My entire summer was a waste. I couldn't sit for long periods of time and driving in the car was a nightmare with the throbbing back. Just this past Friday I was out shopping with a friend and ended up taking several aleve for my back, right then I had an epiphany and said that I was gonna stop taking the lipitor for 1 week and see if my back improved. That was Friday, its now Monday and the pain is only 1/2 what it was....I suspect by the coming Friday I will be pain free.

I have had all the side effects on 10 mg of lipitor for 13 years. My new doctor told me to get off "TOPROL" and take Bystolic (a new blood pressure reducer).

My doctor believes its the blood pressure medication and not the Lipitor.

Boy, after reading all the negative testimonials on Lipitor, I will throw mine in the garbage. That is what they are meant for. I have severe headache, and muscle pain, and foggy head, and I have only been on the crap for 2 months. I believe a lot of people's health is being ruined, and a lot of deaths are happening as well because of Lipitor and other statins. Mark my word, one day this drug will be withdrawn from the market, and the poor Pharmacutial companies will be in huge trouble.. They have the world convinced that we all need statins to bring cholesterol down.. The era when my parents lived , and lived long lives, and on farms, with butter, bacon, lots of fats, and never heard the word STATIN. I think every one that is writing to this forum and complaining about LIPITOR, should make a phone call to PYzier and tell them your side effects, that is the only way anything positive will come from this forum.. thank you for listening... I have called Pyzier and told them as well.

I am a 43 year old male in good health that decided to get off lipitor about 3 days ago due to the advice of my physician. I have been on it for 3 years at 20 mg daily. I am an avid runner completing 3 marathons in the last 4years, but lately haven't been able to run more than a mile or so without feeling tightness in my abs, legs, hips, and most recently my hands and elbows have mild to moderate pain. I've been noticing this over the past few months or so. I always thought it was due to over training, but I am convinced these are not normal muscle soreness/strain and I am eager to share my results as to how I feel in a few weeks/months. Today, which is day 3 without the drug, I have INCREASED pain in my hand, and an overall fatigue feeling. Has anyone else noticed this upon stopping the drug? God help all of us. This can't be doing mankind any good other than making the drug companies rich, and unfortunately, most physicians believe that these statins are wonder drugs, and prescribe them like candy.

I took Lipitor since July & recently am S.O.B. and forgetful, forgetting things like my address, but scariest is my heart pounding & then completely stopping for a few seconds in the middle of the night until I thought I was actually going to pass out or die.

I am a 51 y/o white female that has been on Lipitor for 2 years. I am 5' 1" and when I had to go on it my cholesterol was 267 I weighed 112 lbs. I was shocked.... my doctor told me weight had nothing to do with cholesterol. She kept a close watch on me and my cholesterol came down...... and then my ex-husband of 17 years and I re-connected and got back together and I moved so I had to get another primary care physician. I took all my meds to her, she also kept a close watch on everything. At this time my cholesterol is down to 109 and I asked if I could stop taking it, as I take quite a lot of meds, due to different things and if I could stop anything it would be great, but she said it I stopped it, my cholesterol would go right back up. So since I am not experiencing any side effects I'm okay with continuing it.

I surely hate to hear what you all are experiencing with your Lipitor..... could your doc try another cholesterol medication?

The only one of my meds that is giving me any problem is TOPAMAX........ that we are using as a Migraine preventative! HORRORS!!! Today is pretty good day. But my cognitive abilities are in the trash... I say the wrong word when I mean something else...... I search my mind looking for a memory...... I am also on disability since 2002 because of the Migraines....... I have has them since 1978, but they got progressively worse over the years until I was sick more days per week, sometimes more than 7-10 days at the time, having to be in the hospital being rehydrated and on IV pain meds.......... and as awful as the TOPAMAX is.....it has been reduced the migraines to approx 2 per month and they do not last nearly as long.

So sorry, I got waaay off topic, but I know that it is not the Lipitor that is giving me the side effects as it the last med I had to go on and I had no new side effects....... but that TOPAMAX is kicking my behind.

I'm a 38 y/o woman. For 7 yrs I knew my cholesterol has been high. I refused to take cholesterol medication and decided to diet and exercise but that didn't work. I've had 2 children in the past 3 yrs. In May of this year I started having chest pains and palpitations. I had blood tests done. I was given Inderal and also prescribed Zocor 20mg for my cholesterol. It was 243 with and LDL of 178. I took Zocor for a week. I felt so awful. I was weak, I lost my appetite. I was constantly tired. I couldn't even carry my 10 month old son, yet alone care for him. I informed my physician and she changed it to Lipitor 20mg. I thought I was doing fine. I checked my levels again after a month. My cholesterol was 113 and LDL 58. I trusted the doctor knew what she was doing. At the same time I also was taking Omega 3's. I asked my doc to lower the dosage to 10mg. From the time I was taking Zocor and the start of Lipitor. I was feeling tingling and numbness in my arms, hands, fingers, toes, feet and legs. I also was having muscle pain. I asked my doctor about that. She mentioned because of my heart palpitations, it could be symptoms of anxiety and panic. I had feeling of pins and needles throughout my body, not knowing when it would occur. I had muscle pain in my arms and legs and neck pain. I went online to see the side effects of Lipitor and came across this website. I decided to do an experiment. I stopped taking Lipitor 9 days ago. I was on statins for almost 4 months. I don't have the feeling of tingling and numbness, but I still have pins and needles and muscle pain. I have to say, I feel so much better. I hope to get better. I 'd really like to know, how long does the medication stay in your system? What are the effects of getting off it so suddenly. I'd love to feel myself again.
