Guaifen-C side effects

This is the very best medicine for my allergies, when it starts to get so bad I start to get asthma. I take half a pill, too much if you take a whole one. I take it in the morning because it speeds me up like I had a couple of cups of coffee. It really helps me get through this pollen season and has been no problem as long as I take it in the morning. Then I take benadryl half tablet or a whole one at night.

I am taking the liquid prescribed by my doctor and am experiencing pain in my stomach. I was wondering if anyone else is having this symptom.

I thought it was just me; this medication is not worth the risk. I thought I was going to die; and it made me very emotional and overly tired. I do not feel like myself.

I was prescribed this medicine for flu symtoms, one being congestion. It helped my congestion but made it hard for me to sleep. I felt so incredibly high and uncomfortable while taking this medicine that I have stopped. The worst side effect for me was that it made my right hand tingle the whole time I was taking this.

I was prescribed Guaifen PSE 600-120 for a sinus infection. I took the first tablet at bedtime Friday night. I normally nod off in 2-3 minutes but here I was, 1.5 hours later and I was still wide awake. At 11:30 pm, in an attempt to put this perplexing energy to a productive use, I went downstairs to my office to get a little work done. At 5:30 am I finally got a little sleepy. I then slept for 1.5 hours and couldn't sleep any more. I showered and took another tablet, dreading how tired I was certain I'd be that day and looking forward to a nap. It wasn't long and I felt re-invigorated, like I'd just had the best sleep of my life. I went all day and into the evening, when again I took another tablet at bedtime. Repeat of night #1. Apparently I'm a little slow on the uptake, but I decided that I should investigate this drug for possible side effects. Aha! I experienced the bizarre! dreams when I did doze off, and an emotional plunge (that I never have) too. The upside is that I realized an overnight improvement in my sinus condition, thank goodness that the misery wasn't for naught. Oh, anoher positive side effect is weight loss due to a lack of appetite...LOL All in all, there's got to be a better way to get sinus relief and I'm calling my physician first thing Monday morning.

prescribed for sinus infection. it did help the congestion, but also caused EXTREME fatigue, slow movement, slight hallucinations (a lot of "did i just see..." moments), tremors, dizziness...and this was off ONE pill. i took it on friday, was in bed all day saturday, and had the tremors on sunday.

it's monday morning, & i still don't feel quite right. back to the natural cures for me...

This pill made me feel like i was on speed and i lost most of my hunger! I would still suggest taking the pill but not a whole pill try 1/2 pill at 8am and 1/2 pill at 4pm and you should be fine. I took my last whole pill this morning at 8am and probably will never take a whole again- this drug would be good for ADHD! God Bless and Be careful

Bad case of vertigo that caused me to miss a day of work.

I was prescribed Guaifen fo a cold that settled in my sinus area. It has left my eyes extremely dry, and red and wrinkled all around. I am now very sensetive to light, and it affected my eyesight.

SEVERE PAINS FROM MY HIP DOWN MY RIGHT SIDE OF LEG; WHEN I STOOD UP I COULD NOT PUT WEIGHT ON MY RIGHT LEG. I COULD BARELY WALK...HAD TO TAKE BABY STEPS.

I hve been taking Guaifen since Friday. By Sunday, I have experienced severe nausea, sleeplessness, headaches, hot flashes, dizziness, stomach pain, complete loss of appetite, shaking and increased heartbeat. If the side effects of the cure are worse than the sinus infection, why put this on the market?!

I never take more than half a pill a day when my sinuses were unbearable, and I never had any problem. I drink lots of water and never take it after 2PM and was fine.

THIS DRUG IS HORRIBLE!!! This drug caused me to have terrible mood swings and emotional instability like I have NEVER experienced before. It also caused loss of appetite. This drug has the potential to cause major emotional side effects.

I wouldn't wish these side effects on anybody. My doctor prescribed this medicine to me on a Monday, I took my first pill after dinner that evening, when I went to bed I had such terrible pain in my ears and face. I barely slept that night nothing would ease the pain. I didn't really have much ear problems before I took the pill only pressure around my eyes, however after taking the pill it intensifed the pressure in my face and brought out severe ear pain. I refused to take any more of this medicine, however this 1 pill I took remained in my system because the following night I had the worst, most horrifing dreams of my life, I couldn't even repeat these dreams to anyone. This medicine is terrible it did me no good, the only thing I got out of it was more intense pain and pressure and dreams that are to horrible to even talk about.

I started taking Guaifen 3 days ago and i had a hard time sleeping. The first day i felt that my heart was beating very fast and i could not sleep at all. The next night, again, i was not able to sleep even 30 mintues altogether, and during those 30 mintues, i had nightmares. I did not know that this medication can cause sleeplessness until i read the side affects. I knew there was something wrong becuase it is unlike me not to sleep, since i love sleeping.

Keeps me more awake during the day (not really a bad thing).

I take it around 5 PM so that when I go to bed around 12 I can fall asleep.

I was taking guaifen for a sinus infection. I felt like I was dieing. It seemed like I had no blood pressure what so ever, my stomach hurt constantly, could not sleep, headache, awful taste in my mouth and was constantly freezing. I finally figured out that it was the medication causing these awful symptoms. When I looked up guaifen on the internet I was appauled that a doctor would prescribe such a thing!

Have been taking for over a year. When I ran out a month ago I got the worst ear ache of my life. My sinus' blocked up and busted my ear drums. I have never experienced pain like that in my life. I take just once a morning. 600/120 type pills. I sleep on the average 9 hours a night. I'm now truly scared to go without it. My pharmasist said not to take it on the day of my upcoming marathon in June due to possibility of heart rate issues. She didn't mention anything about dehydration. I'll be taking it the very next day.

Just been prescribed this drug for a chronic sinus infection. After reading the above, I'm scared to death to take it. I have slight anxiety disorder. What should I do?

Well the wierd dreams are definitely apparent, and the heart palpatations happen 4 or 5 times a day when I'm on it but it's no big deal (I dont think ) I sleep fine except for the dreams, but I think I sleep fine due to not having the post nasal drip there, so overall I am satisfied with the drug. Sometimes I feel restless but it soon goes away but that is about it.

Guaifen definately cleared my drainage right up and has kept me awake and efficient during the day which is a nice break considering I have felt tired and unable to breath for the past week due to a sinus infection. It has though made me rediculously oversensitive/emotional and have abnormal daydreams.

I am currently using guaifen and albuterol for severe cold symptoms. The most noticeable side effects I have experienced are nausea, decreased appetite and dizziness.

sensitive to microwave, felt a warm feeling then dizziness after using the microwave while on this medication.

I have been recently been taking guaifen and the past few nights i have experienced weird dreams and i have not been able to sleep very well. this drug speeds up my heart rate and makes me very hyper. i also have difficulty speaking. i have been very silent over the past few days. the drug works though i don't have a cough anymore.

This drug has made me have weird dreams and gave me bad mood swings. Whenever I am on it I begin to my mind begins to wonder. I have had to throw up every morning since being on the drug and gaging is pretty normal. I usually open a window for this...This drug has helped my sickness tremendously and do not see a problem with the side effects.

I have some kind of sickness which is going around and I couldn't hear one morning out of one ear so I went to the doctor and he prescribed me Guaifen. It worked right away after the first 30 mins my ears begin to pop and slowly return some of my hearing. The first day I took it it made me drowsy. I only take it at around the time I go to bed and it wakes me up around 7 or 8 am every time so far. I usually wake up with a really bad cough which I try not to swallow and although its supposed to help me with the cough it dosen't do anything for my sore throat. My sickness is slowly fading but the ear has not healed after the first day.

Dr. prescribed guaifen w/p-ephed 600/120mg 2x a day for sever sinus pressure - it certainly has releived the sinus pressure. My side effects have been racing heart beat shortly after taking, upset stomach within minutes and the most problematic has been the feeling of itching on the front of my entire legs, front & back upper torso - especially the upper back and entire scalp as well as waking up 1 hour after taking the PM dose - full of energy - getting ALOT accomplished. However, I am going to stop taking this medication as I want a full restful night's sleep and want the itching to STOP. I personally will never use this product again. Prescribe Guaifen for potential liquid trapped in my ears, that was causing them to pop and ache. My finger nails have turned blue, shortness of breath, and a hard time focusing.

Now I know why I've been so moody - after reading these posts it must be common after taking this drug. (like ephedrine) I feel like I haven't talked in a week! Not to mention my shortness of breath. I had a phone interview - EMBARRASSING! I could hardly breath! Get this stuff off the shelves. It hasn't even really helped.

I took Guaifen W/P- ephed 600 and I will NEVER again!! I barely slept at all and what little I did, I had nightmares.

I've had ringing in my ears for a couple of years. Found out it was from sinus pressure. At times my vision would go blurry from ther extreme sinus pressure.
I have been taking Guaifen PSE ER for a couple of months. It has lessned the pain and actually stopped the ringing once. Taking lots of water is very important. It is hard some times to handle the irritability, but harder to handle the feeling your head is about to explode, which it has completely handled. I just started noticing the problem with urination, which I do lot of with all the water I'm drinking. I wake up at night with post nasal drip and lots of phlem which I am happy to see go. No way I will take this for years as some have done. If it comes down to that, I'll call roto router to clean it out.
Does anyone know of a natural cure for sinus trouble?

Was prescribed Guaifen along with Robitussin, and broke out in hives within 3 days - even taken only half the dose prescribed. Don't know if it was the Robitussin or the Guaifen or the combination, but from seeing the comments here, I assume it was the Guaifen (esp since I've taken Robitussin before, with no side effects).

I started taken Guaifen 11/18/05 and the next day, 11/19/05 I started having pains in my upper back and I feel my chest has pressure on it and I am having troubling breathing normal. I will discontinue the use of this drug.

Reading these posts makes me feel a lot more normal. I took my first and last Guaifen tablet last night at 10:30 for chronic sinus problems. By 1:30, I was up, heart pounding, dizzy and disoriented. It's 8pm and I am still not able to go to sleep. I have slight high blood pressure. That may have played a part. But, I reminded the dr. of this when he prescribed this.

For those of you who posted that you like it, I'm happy for you. I'm staying far, far away from it.

Guaifen PSE ER, Has anyone experienced extreme limb achiness with this med?

My doctor prescribed this medication for a sinus infection. Usually have been prescribed a Z-pack for this by my regular doctor. I took this medication right after returning home about middle afternoon. I was awake untill 5 am went to work and took again in the AM, with my regular morning breakfast of coffee and toast, didn't eat much during the rest of the day, not hungry felt like I was on diet pills (heart palpations, etc. ).
My headache which usually accompanys sinus infections got worse so I went to bed early because it was really a very bad headache and at 5AM I woke up in a cold sweat and started throwing up. After feeling the same at 8AM Since it was Saturday I opt to go to Urgent Care. Was seen by doctor by 9:30AM. By this time I was still throwing up, horrible headach, and cold sweats. My blood preasure was at all time hight 160 over 100. Needless to say this doctor gave me the Z-Pack and he asked to see me again on Monday morning at which time my blood preasure was back to normal 116 over 80.
I will never knowingly take this medication AGAIN! Please note: 1. I have never had high blood pressure, actually it is usually low. 2. When taking medications I will always drink more water than I normally do to help just to flush out my body, especially when I am taking sinus medications as they usually "dry me out".

Yea, ive taken this drug off and on for sinus infections for a couple of years. I wonder if this drug wasnt responsible in part for my sudden arythmia (untimely heart rhythm) and tachycardia (heartbeat over 100 bpm)... but on to the side effects ive gotten over the years. Basically ive noticed a feeling in my upper stomach like if i had almost acidic Gas or something, I get to feeling semi lightheaded and disoriented, Tired yet at the same time hyper which is odd.. like my mind is willing but my body isnt. Overall I feel malaise (feeling of slight illness)... think im dieing sometimes when on it! Heart Palpatations (when the heart is a little slow and then speeds up to catch up pumping a larger volume of blood through at once which is basically what it feels like... something hitting your heart from within). Anyway overall the drug is aweful... I took one today hoping it wouldnt hurt me too bad so i could get rid of my Ear Effusion(middle ear fluid), and my sinus blockage. I would suggest a reevaluation as well, I thought i was the only one getting all of these side effects for years until today. Go figure.

Have had insomnia for 3 days on this med, after specifically telling the MD (not my regular doctor) that I had trouble with pseudoephedrine. My heart rate was very rapid and irregular. I am also an athelete, and drink tons of water. This medication wasn't in my PDR, so thanks to this web site I have found what the culpret is, and it isn't menapause!!!!

An 18 year old who occasionally helps us at our farm took guaifen for a week, taking his last pill yesterday. Today he wrecked our pickup by running thru a barbed wire fence, shearing off two oak 12-inch square h-brace posts, smashing a 12-ft metal gate, and damaging 3 pieces of 12-inch gated irrigation pipe. The young man stated, after my husband who was riding with him managed to turn off the truck, that he did not remember any of the events and only "came to" when the truck came to a stop. My husband says that his (the young man's) eyes were open during the entire event, but he did not respond to my husband's shouting at him to stop. Of course we can't say for sure that guaifen caused this "blackout" but it does give cause for alarm. Thank God the young man was not driving alone on a highway!!!

I took this medicine at 7 in the morning and by 9:30 I was bouncing off the walls. It says to take it every 12 hours so I took it again at & p.m. I probably won't sleep until about 12 tonight! :( But I'm taking it along with Cefzil (250 MG) so it might be a reaction between the two.

I felt extremely irritable. I had a very rapid heartbeat. I was short of breath, and felt as though I might faint. This lasted several hours after I took this medication. I obviously stopped taking it.

I was prescribed 600 twice a day. They make me feel a little sick to my stomach, but that could be due to not eating in 3 days from being so sick. Also, I tossed and turned all night. It was miserable, but if it takes care of the sinus pressure then I am willing to deal with it.

I was prescribed GUAIFEN PSE because I had a bad cold with congestion. The med cleared up the congestion but left the worst aftertaste. I had problems eating because everything tasted like burned chemicals. Yeeccchhh!

Don't read all of these posts. I personally have not had much of a problem, let me explain...

I think most of these people exaggerate, and their problems are caused by dehydration. When taking this medication you have to drink excess water, not just the daily amount you should already be drinking. The people with serious problems probably drink lots of coffee or soda with caffeine instead of water. This product basically has ephedrine in it, so it increases your heart rate, and caffeine will compound that problem and the dehydration as caffeine has diuretic effects. A lot of these people probably also took a diet pill and didnt tell their doctor, and that will increase the problems substantially, especially if people are also on a low calorie intake diet. It also constricts blood ways, so if you smoke or you have heavily clogged blood ways already you will most likely have a problem.

You can expect to lose weight though, how about that as a positive side effect.

I would bet that 90% of the problem people on here did not follow the directions with the medication.

I run a lot so that makes me tired after I have already taken the medication twice, so I have not noticed much sleep loss, but you should take this with breakfast and lunch not with dinner.

When I took this with the antibiotic I would occasionally experience abnormal heart beats, but when I stopped taking the antibiotic that stopped, probably because I wasn't supposed to be exposed to a lot of sun, and I live in SO CAL. Read the warnings on all of your medication and tell your doctor about all of the over the counter stuff you take including diet pills.

My doctor did not inform me this is a psuedo-ephedrine drug. Which means you should NOT consume caffienated products while on the medication. It could increase the side-effect of dizzyness. The psuedo-ephedrine is also the reason you could feel like "your on speed" or the loss of appetite. Ephedrine isn't for everyone. If you experience those feelings it's best to take a half dose or to stop taking it all. Ephedrine/ephedra are used in many diet pills- most of which are being pulled from the shelves.

When used correctly; modifed to fit an individual, Guaifen can work beautifully.
