I used to take Atenolol and had side effects. Unfortunately, all doctors know is to push drugs, instead alternatives. I am taking a natural product now with no side effects.

I was on Atenolol for about 3 months, for slightly elevated BP, started having chest pain, heart palps, dizziness, anger/depression, couldn't barely drag myself out of bed, Dr, gave me 50mgs, but I was only taking a fourth pill a day, had horrible hair loss and still do 2 months later, It took about 2 weeks for the heart palps to subside after I stopped taking it, these drugs are dangerous, and I feel for the millions of people who continue to believe that there Dr.s actually care!! They don't, it's all about the almighty dollar, Research for yourself, because no one else will, take care. Marlee22

I have been taking Atenolol since 2001. I take 75Mg each AM and am taking it for occasional Atrial Fib (AF) episodes. I have not had any physical impairment, or problems with being tired or problems things mentioned here. All in all, I have tolerated the Atenolol well. However, recently tried taking Lisinopril (only 4 days and I hate it and have all the problems you mention here and more) as it is suppose to help reduce AF.
HOWEVER, I have seen several significant metabolic side effects since I started taking the Atenolol I wanted to share. 1) I gained at least 20 LBS in the first year. 2) I became insulin resistant and saw my Triglycirides increase significantly (from the 200s to the 700s) and I have had to reduce carbs to keep them low, 3) I have seen my blood glucose (BG) levels rise resulting from the Atenolol. I have experimented and found my fasting BG levels in the AM are around 105 BEFORE taking the Atenolol, then within a hour of taking the Atenolol, they go up to 150-160 - that is without eating anything. Be aware of these implications. I am trying to find something as an alternative to Atenolol due to the BG levels, but have not yet. As I said, I tried Lisinopril, but that won't work.

I have been on Atenenol for 5 months and I have suffered from the following. I have had nausea, depression, feeling tired all the time, can't sleep at night, and sometimes my hands and feet are swollen. I didn't think it was from the atenenol, but after reading some of the other ppl's side effects I am starting to think it is caused by the meds. I am on it for hpb, and I am only 30.

I have been on atenolol for about 9 months. I take 1/2 of a 25mg tablet. I also experience tiredness. At times I have weak moments that last about 20 minutes, then I began to feel better. I have some cramping in my calves at times. I walk each day but have shortness of breath during these walks. I thought that is was just because I have trouble pulling the hills. I also have the cold fingers and toes at times. I do feel a little depression and don't have much creativity as I once did. I read that Atenolol could cause congestive heart failure. I'm thinking of tapering off, any comment?

I have been taking Atenolol 25mg./day for 5 1/2 months for high blood
pressure. I am a 63 year old female. The side effects for me are
tingling in my fingers, which is especially annoying at night, and
muscle pain in my legs. I did not associate either of these effects
with the drug until I researched it on the internet and learned that
they might be associated with atenolol. I have since reduced the
dose in half and am experiencing less tingling and muscle pain

I am trying to wean off of Atenolol bc it makes me tired and I feel as though my metabolism has slowed down. I have been on it for one year due to a fast heart beat. I did not have hbp when prescribed and I don't now. I was suffering from anxiety due to katrina and quit smoking. sometimes I feel sick to my stomach. has anyone gotten sick to their stomach from this med. also, I found that if I take it at night I am not tired during the day but I do have strange dreams.
my real question is how can I wean myself off this drug. I am afraid that if I stop it I will be somewhere and my heart will jump out of my chest.

I've been taking atenolol 6 months now and my basic complaint is the coughing. I have to practically sit up in bed at night. At first I thought it was just the usual summertimer postnasal drip causing the cough so I put up with it. Have to take ricoloas or some kind of drops all day to keep the cough down. I've heard other pills like this all come with the cough. If there is another that DOESN'T maybe someone can get back to me a nd let me know.
I have a doctor who isn't very communicative but if I complain about something he does what he can to try something else. This time, however, I'm doing my own research and so far have come up with zip as to any replacement. In fact, my blood pressure isn't much better. Was in the office for another reason the other day and it read 138/100.
Thanks!

I was taking Atenolol for about three years and suffered from dizziness, anxiety attacks, depression, wheezing and shortness of breath, muscular aches and pains, but some of those symptoms may have been caused by other medication I was, and still am, taking.
I stopped taking atenolol but also stopped taking the cholestrol-lowering tablets just before that and got them replaced by the doctor.
The aches and pains stopped and the depression almost gone, but still experimenting.
Trouble with doctors is they always give you and treat you with tablets that will have no come-back on them - just in case, so we never know where we stand. I had thought of suggesting taking niacin and asking the doctor`s advice but I know what he`d say and advise me not to take them to clear himself; point is, my cholestrol dropped from 7.8 to 3.6!!

I am taking 10mg of Lisinopril every morning and 25mg of ATENOLOL each evening. Initially it stopped my anxiety attacks and lowered my blood pressure but I found myself getting tired quick and falling asleep for long periods. I have only been on this medication recently because of the anxiety attacks but in the last two days I have noticed my feet have swollen and am unable to put my shoes on. Needless to say, after reading some of the comments on the side effects of ATENOLOL, I am going to give it a miss and report back to my doctor.

I took Atenolol for 6 months and during that time I experienced terrible anxiety attacks. It got so bad I would not leave my home. I talk to my doctor and he said he had not heard anything about this kind of side effect from this medication. Well I am no longer on Atenolol and the anxiety attacks have stopped. I wish I had known about this before I started taking it. I lost my job over the terrible side effects from this medication,

I've been on it for about a month and have been getting more and more dizzy each week. I am on 50MG and am wondering if I need to go down to 25MG. I usually have lots of energy and I seem to get tired mid-day now. Wondering if this is because of the drug. I am also weaning off of Effexor so this might be causing it too.

I was on Atenolol (Tenormin) since June 1998. Ever so gradually, I began to lose my voice to the point that I was sent to speech therapy after being diagnosed with Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia by a throat doctor. It was of no help.. and made the doctor mad, frustrated the voice therapist. I was also having intermittant problems swallowing for no apparent physical reason. After quitting taking Atenolol, my voice began to slowly return. Unfortunately I have gotten into some bad habits that I now must break (using false vocal cords for speaking).. But the cause was most definitely the Atenlol..

My doctor put me on Atenolol (50MG) about six months ago. After one week I was so dizzy, restless and my feet were numb and swollen. I was always tired but couldn't sleep. My blood pressure fell to 90/46 and I though I was going to pass out. I cut the pill in half and take it with my breakfast. I do notice the difference. My blood pressure is good, I don't have the dizzy spells and I got my ambition back. I think these doctors start a person off on to high of a dose at the beginning of a new pill. There's times I skip it for a day. My life seems much better now.

I have been on Atenolol for about 7 years now - 25mg. At first I found it made me feel tired and slowed me down too much, however, I decided to cut it in 1/2 and take 1/2 in the am and 1/2 in the pm and this seems to work much better.
In fact, when I told my doctor, he said it was a better idea since instead of getting a larger dose all at once, and having it wear off later in the day, the dosage would be more constant in my blood stream all day.
Thankfully, I really can't say I have any negative side affects from it and I do not take any drug I really don't need because I do not tolerate medications very well. The only other medication I take is Synthroid because 9 years ago I had radioactive iodine for my thyroid condition.

I have been on atenolol for 19 years. I think it effected my thyroid. I was on it for 7 yrs, was tired and cold all the time. Was put on thyroid medicine. I am still cold all the time, read on-line that atenolol slows down blood flow to hands and feet and can cause coldness. Also having hair loss and anxiety. It appears that the atenolol affected my thryoid, the thryoid medicine causes the anxiety - and the cycle continues!

I had very bad side effects from Atenolol. I felt completely exhausted, where even walking a small distance is difficult. I felt intense pressure in my chest and head, as though something were pushing me back! I could barely keep up with my daily routine on this medication. My doctor did change it, saying I could not tolerate it.

Atenolol decreases the heart rate. If your heart rate slows down, you will feel tired and lazy and lack energy. Take your blood pressure and your pulse and keep a diary and show your Doctor. You may need a dose adjustment.

I have been on Atenolol for about 5 years. Thankfully, I do not experience the side effects that many are complaining about. My dosage is 75mg and I take HCTZ 25mg along with it. Recently I was put on Lisinopril and that has been an absolute nightmare. Dizziness, Headache, Dry, Spastic Cough and a Sore Tongue showing little deep slits in the front area and red.
