I'm 45 I had the mirena inserted 5 1/2 years ago for heavy and painful periods that made me acutely anemic. I had the second Mirena 10 months ago. Until i read this site and others like it I thought I was going mad. Only advantage for me has been super light periods. Have had weight gain round stomach, thighs and butt and cannot shift it despite doubling exercise and halving food intake. Have constant headaches and reccurrant sinus infections and memory/concentration problems, water retention nearly all month long and feel depressed most of the time. also oily skin libido is non existent! also joint pains and insomnia. Doctor said it was menopause but tests came back negative. Have an appointment next week to have it removed. A bit anxious about how heavy periods will be as they were pretty awful before but can't handle these side effects. Any one else my age whose had mirena removed how long before periods back to normal?

This is the second time I have switched birth control in the last year and looked for side effects online. I started the nuvaring 6 days ago and yesterday felt sick all day, had abdominal cramping, and was so moody and irritable. I haven't been sleeping well either for the past few nights. Today at the gym, I was getting dizzy and tired during my workout when it was only a Zumba class and not very strenuous (I work out everyday). I also just have that overall "weird" and tired feeling. I had these exact same side effects when I tried Yaz earlier this year. If you switch back to the pill, I suggest Desogen, which I will start taking again since I just took the ring out after reading similar stories - I have never had any side effects or problems with it and can't find websites that have bad experiences like this one and the one I found for Yaz earlier this year.

I started Nuvaring in June of 2008 and it hasn't been that so far but I have had severe depression where I can't get out of the bed I just cry and cry and I'm very moody. Sometimes during sex I have cramps that won't go away until maybe the next day if I'm lucky. I've also gained at least 20 to 30 pounds since I've started. I noticed that I could eat and still feel like I never ate a bite. The only plus is that my period is regulated and my cramps aren't that bad but is it really worth it?

I was on Doxy for a month and a half due to mild acne. For the first month, I felt fine, however when I went to refill, things became awful. Although I did not notice the nausea or tiredness (because I took it before going to bed), I began to feel episodes of dizziness, confusion, inability to concentrate, and anxiety. I continued taking it because I had not been informed that these might be side effects. Eventually I had 2 panic attacks where my legs shook uncontrollably, I felt I could not breath, became really cold and sweaty, had racing thoughts that I might die, and felt incredibly confused. The attacks really scared me to the point where I was afraid of having another one. When I went to the doctor, they ran blood tests, told me everything was alright, diagnosed me with panic disorder, and gave me medication. Even though I told them I was taking this medication, no one ever told me this might be side effects. I have never had any mental problems and am an upbeat, happy person. While taking this, I had severe anxiety and bouts of depression where I felt like crying for no reason. I was afraid to be alone, I was afraid to workout, and afraid to leave the house. I could not study and thought my entire life was spinning out of control. I've been off it for 2 days and am feeling much better. Anxiety has decreased and depressive episodes are also decreasing. There should be better research on these drugs to inform consumers!

I am so glad I found this site, I have been on a emotional roller coaster. The insertion was the worst experience I have ever had and I had two c-sections! Right from the beginning I noticed I would have bad PMS symptoms, but after I stopped breastfeeding they got worse. I have been so depressed, I cry a lot and I don't want to be around anyone, I just want to stay home with my family all the time and normally we would be out having a good time. I have bad cramps and I have no energy, I use to workout 5x a week for a hour, but now it takes a lot just for me to go for a walk. I gained 12 pounds!! And my mood swings are out of control. I just talked to my mother and was telling her that something is not right with me, I don't feel myself, I told her I thought I was going crazy. She told me why don't you look up side effects of the IUD, because I didn't know what else to do, so I found this site and thank you all! I have a appointment tomorrow morning to get this thing out. Never again and I would tell anyone not to get the mirena.

Hello, I was prescribed Avelox 400 mg by my doctor. I am a healthy male, 34 yrs old, athletic, work out regularly and in lean condition. I had a sinus infection, started using Avelox and on the second day, after a light tricep workout experience wicked pain/ultra rapid swelling in my left elbow approx. 30 mins after exercising. I could barely move the limb and the swelling went down after packing it with ice. I called TeleHealth and they told me not to stop taking it and see a doctor. I went to a walk in clinic, showed the injury to the doctor on shift and he told me I must of over exerted myself during exercising. I was told to continue taking Avelox. I decided it was in my best interest to stop any weight lifting exercises. I decided to do a light cardio workout on the fifth day, 20 minutes at a lower speed than usual ( 2.8 ) and after completing the work out experienced some stiffness in my left knee. Approx. 30 mins later, I experienced the same wicked pain/ultra rapid swelling in my knee. I could not walk and had to crawl to a phone to call for assistance. This was approx. one month ago, now I have pain in both elbows, knees, right shoulder, both forearms close to the elbows, and tennis elbow in the left forearm. I have not exercised since then and my doctor told me to discontinue the med. His advice was to take anti inflammatories and rest. The left knee and elbow swell when I walk or just hold the phone to my ear for an extended period of time. I would like to know what you found during R&D of this med. and how long I am expected to be like this. This is now affecting my social life and restricting me from doing what I enjoy in life and affecting my performance at work.

I've had Mirena for almost 2 years. I am bloated and fatigued. My joints hurt, especially my hips. I've gained 5 pounds and cannot lose it, even working out 7 days a week. I workout regularly but not with the stamina I used to have. I am 39 and in great shape. I can't make it through my classes the way I used. I struggle and it's very depressing. For the past few months my sex drive is zero. I am considering having it removed. Was it extremely painful?

Thank God for this Site!!!
Just wanted to add a recent post. I have all the same symptoms... fatigue, emotional roller coaster, dizziness, headaches, as well as feeling incredibly insecure. I want NOTHING to do with sex. TMI warning... My boyfriend and I used to have sex AT LEAST on a daily basis, now I cant stand to think about it. I am 25 and have played sports all my life. I even coach for a high school team. This BC is aweful. On top of not having enough energy to do ANYTHING, when I pushed myself to workout, there were absolutely NO results. This is a debilitating drug that has been branded with an incredible amount of false advertising. It seems the pro's that the company braggs about the most, couldn't be further from the truth.
So once again, if you don not want:
Dizziness
Eye sensitivity and pain
Extreme mood swings ( from throwing things to crying over commercials)
Severe cramping (even when not on your period)
Insecurity
Weight gain and inability to loose weight
Food craving
Migraines
Oily hair
acne
Fatigue
DO NOT TAKE YAZ!!!!!

I had Mirena put in five days ago. I have had cramping off and on. I finally did a complete workout on my pilates reformer and did just fine. I have yet to see what having sex with my husband is like with this thing in me. I am a little scared about pain. I do feel bloated. I will keep everyone up to date on how I am doing. I sure wish I had come across this website before I decided to put this in.

Just had Mirena put in two days ago (Friday). This is Sunday and tried to workout and couldn't finish. I usually do pilates on a reformer everyday. I feel tired and crampy. I never looked up Mirena on the internet before I had it inserted and feel scared to death. I don't want to bloat or constantly spot. I have a great sex life with my husband and constantly having to worry about bleeding will make my sex life a disaster. I will keep everyone up to date on what I am going through. I sure hope I don't have any problems with this. I was pregnant with triplets 6 weeks ago and lost them and decided I better get on some great birth control. My doctor thought this would be great for me to go on. Lets all hope the cramping and light bleeding stops.

I've been on synthroid now for about a year. My dosage is VERY little (0.075). My doctor keeps running blood tests every 3 months and assures me I am within the "lower-end" of the norm, but I still feel tired, sleep deprived, wake up with night-sweats and I keep gaining weight...
I am only 24 and have just been told that I need to take this medication for the rest of my life, it\s pretty depressing. I keep asking if there are other ways to lose weight and feel more energized. He tells me that I need to keep taking this medication and has put me on a "sleep hygeine" routine where I go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
Does this "disease" mean I will always be overweight and tired for the rest of my life? I would like to know if someone else with more experience with this medication can give any sort of advice? Feeling a little hopeless about it and not really interested in complaining to my doctor anymore.
Thanks:)

I have had the NuvaRing for now 4 weeks and I feel more tired than usual. I have to force myself to workout because I feel so sluggish. I actually thought I was doing good with my work out routine for the past couple of weeks until I weighed myself and found out today that I gained 7 POUNDS! I have crazy dreams at night dealing with just about anything. I always had a high sex drive now I don't even want my boyfriend of 2 yrs to touch me. Maybe it is the NR that is making me so aggravated. I might need to take this thing out!!!

These reviews are pretty scary to me ... I've been taking Yasmin for about 5 years. Late last year, I started getting what seemed like a full period (not just spotting) almost exactly two weeks into my pill pack. Then I'd get another full period when I got to the end of the pack, and I went ahead and took the sugar pills because I didn't want to mess around with my cycle (which I've done in the past, with negative results). My doc switched me to reclipsen for a month (which I've read bad things about too, but not as bad as Yasmin!). I've had NO sex drive for years now, which I've blamed on myself, but it's really affected my relationship w/ my fiance. It's hard because I just can't get excited. I loved Yasmin and recommended it to all my friends because it kept my water weight down. Last month when I went off of it, I gained about 8lb in just a few weeks. I attributed it to going on vacation and not exercising for a week (I normally eat very well and never miss a workout). But since then, the weight has stayed and is very slowly coming off. I'm a personal trainer and I never usually struggle like this. I've also been bloated and it seems like I have an excessive amount of abdominal bloating.
Anyway, after a month on reclipsen, I decided to switch back to Yasmin to see if the month on another drug "tricked" my cycle back into following Yasmin (wishful thinking!). Sure enough, got my period two weeks in. Also got lots of bloating, constipation (never normally a problem for me), and moodiness/ depression. I've had "stomach issues" for years, and I've even had a colonoscopy with no real diagnosis. My abdomen is always tender to the touch. I never would've thought Yasmin could be a cause, but now I really wonder. Also, in the last couple weeks that I took Yasmin again, I noticed days where it felt hard to breathe, and I just blamed myself and my weight, figuring it was the few extra things I ate that made me bloat. But now reading other experiences, I realize how unusual my recent experiences are for me. Now I'm not sure what to do -- I don't think reclipsen is a good answer. I want to go off pills completely for a while, but I'm really afraid of weight gain (Yasmin is addictive that way -- I love how it's kept my water weight down and I've been afraid to go off of it). Fortunately, I haven't had the blood clotting (to my knowledge) or acne. But I do have overuse injuries that never seem to heal -- now I wonder how much those relate to Yasmin. I won't be taking it anymore!

I am so excited to hear that other women are having issues with Mirena. I thought I was the only one. I had it inserted in Sept 07 and have not stopped bleeding since. My acne has become horrible and unmanageable. I feel extremely depressed for no reason. The only benefit is that I have an increased libido, and it feels great, but all the spotting has discouraged me from participating.
I noticed instant weight gain, despite working out at high intensity (700+calories burned per workout) 5 days a week.
I had hoped that with time these side effects would subside. The side effects have decreased slightly, but not disappeared completely.

I am just slightly hypothyroid and could go without meds, but decided to try meds, and endocrinologist suggested Levoxyl 50 mcg per day. First day on the drug, felt exhausted by night time, next morning, usually jump out of bed for workout and was extremely tired at the gym, no energy, was starving during the day even after breakfast which is unusual for me, and exhausted by evening, and third day woke up with swollen glands and exhaustion, knew something was up. Decided to research the side effects and found others with similar symptoms and didn't like long term effects so I am going off the drug and hoping I caused no damage to my system. My doctor's reaction was "impossible" that the drug could cause this. My reaction was, "no thank you, I think for myself, know my body, and know this drug caused this reaction." I was feeling fine before 3 days ago, and how could so many have similar symptoms if it isn't the drug.

I was on Femcon Fe for about 6 weeks and I was always tired. I gained weight while on this bc and had severe bloating. I run on the treadmill for 30 min a day and while on this bc I never had enough energy to workout at all. After I got off Femcon Fe I was peeing like crazy because while I was taking it no matter how much water I drank I would rarely pee. this bc made me retain water. It made my mouth very dry I had leg cramps and shortness of breath with chest pains.

I have been on the 4 months going on 5. i may have gained a little weight but just water weight. My skin has cleared up and i am not getting the PMS breakouts anymore. I just turned 29 and still get acne so anything that helps is welcome. however i have been noticing slight headaches here and there. i typically don't get headaches and from what i have read on these blogs the ring may be to blame...other than slight weight gain and a headache or two it's been good using the ring. i also don't get ravenously hungry before my period anymore which is a blessing, i would eat anything and a lot of it-lol! i am going to be paying more attention though, and come to think of it i have noticed been tired and i workout a lot so i usually have tons of energy. tough call, i guess every birth control method has draw backs.

As MANY of you have posted, "I thought I was just getting 'old." Now I know it's the statins. I thought I was doing the right thing because I have family history of cholesterol problems. I was first on pravachol, then lipitor for a few years, now Vytorin - which dropped my numbers to the lowest ever - 190.
HOWEVER - I have never felt worse. I have all the 'symptoms' described in this blog. Reclusive, depressed, extreme shoulder/neck stiffness and pain. Low back, and hip joint pain (severe). I can't even workout because I don't have the stamina to go through my routine. LOSS OF MEMORY!! This is severe. I use to be able to memorize hundreds of numbers or addresses and now can't remember a number that I looked at 2 seconds ago! This is insane! They need to remove this drug from the market. I'm done with statins.

Well...I guess I'm not crazy. My doctor assured me this pill was great...I'm finding that not to be the case! I was put on Femcon FE following the birth of my second child via c-section. Since starting the pill I have experienced headaches, depression and MAJOR WEIGHT GAIN. Prior to the pill I was about 3lbs. away from my pre-pregnancy weight. After 6 weeks on the pill I have gained over 12lbs. It makes no sense. I am monitoring my caloric intake which is around 1500-1700 calories per day. I attend a tough "boot camp" style workout 4 days a weeks. How can I be gaining weight? I'm considering just going off birth control all together. I'm 39 and our family is complete. I just can't tolerate this much longer.

Update: Exactly one week post removal and I'm feeling like a new woman, mom, wife, teacher, and friend. I have more energy than I ever expected. The detox/cleanse is working wonders for my appetite and weight and the weight seems to be coming off w/out a lot of extra work. I have enough energy now to get through a whole workout whereas before I struggled. Moods are not so dominant now and the headaches are gone. Besides the small amount of spotting the first few days - nothing. Will continue to update as the weeks go by.......

Hi: My doctor has suggested me lupron depot 3.75mg for three months before doing supracervical laparoscopy. I did ask the doctor about the side effects and she said that you might get hot flashes and mood swings. Thats all she said about the side effects. My first shot is on Tuesday April 15/08. After reading all these experiences i am so scared to take them and planning to talk to the doctor again and looking into the abdominal hystrectomy instead of supracervical laparoscopy. Do you guys think that because it is 3.75mg and not 7 or more mg it might not have that many side effects.
God, I am so confused now, please help me out here.

I have been on Lisinopril 10mg and HCTZ 12.5 mg for about 2-3 weeks. I have noticed extreme fatigue, especially during and right after exercise. The other day I went swimming and I laid on the couch for 3 hours until my energy started coming back up. I have also noticed I don't have the energy to get as good or intense of a workout as before. My BP is in the 130'-140's, but I am 32 and I would like to fix the problem now since I am young. After reading the postings here, I am going off the medication and trying alternative ways to lower my bp---exercise, dash diet etc. Hopefully I can lower my bp about 15-20 points by doing this. I am not opposed to taking a pill, but not at the expense of feeling tired and confused and not being able to exercise. Any thoughts on better bp meds?
