I went off Yasmin 4 months ago. While my period returned quickly after quitting and has been regular, the abdominal pain/cramping, greasy hair, acne (I never had acne in the past), and mild mood swings are persisting into month 5. I have especially strong abdominal pain in the morning when I wake up, which subsides a little after I urinate. Does anyone have any advice for how I can speed up my body's process of returning to 'normalcy?' The greasy hair and skin are especially frustrating, and the abdominal pain is uncomfortable. Is there some herbal supplement or something that could help??

HI Everyone! I am a 21 year old mother of a 6 month old little boy. I have had the worst experience with the Mirena. I had it inserted in May of 2008. I am trying to have it removed but my ob/gyn won't do it. I have had severe pain everywhere especially in my head. I have been put on migraine meds but nothing has helped. I have had bleeding beyond belief. I have been bleeding almost since it was put it. Pads after pad after tampon after tampon. I have never had bleeding this heavy. I am so frustrated. I rather take a pill everyday than go through these horrible feelings

Yes, I do agree that everyone reacts differently to bcp, and should decide for themselves once taken the pills, their own opinions. However, even though many women on this website have negative comments about Loestrin, believe it or not, it has helped me. The comments have not persuaded my decision to start or stop the pill, but has let me know that what I'm experiencing is NORMAL! I was freaking out and my doctor was of NO help! The extreme moodiness, pregnancy symptoms, back pain, fatigue, and worst of all(no one posted but makes sense now) was after intimacy I would immediately have severe cramps, leg pain, and back pain that lasted about 30min. I felt as if I was in labor, and I know that feeling. So yes, decide which pill is right for you, but Loestrin is NOT the pill for me!!! Thank you to all the comments posted because it made me realize I am not alone, and helped me figure out why I was experiencing these symptoms when my doctor couldn't.

First off, i think its important to remember that all bcp have these side-effects. its not that one pill is better or worse than another, its that everyone's body reacts differently and sometimes you will experience these side effects and sometimes you wont. all these horrible things women are listing about Loestrin, other women have said about other pills.

for example, when i first started taking a bcp, i was on ortho-lo. this one seemed fine at first (outside the three month adjustment time) then one breast started to swell and ache while the other was fine. it was just my body reacting to the combination of hormones in that particular pill. i know other women who have taken ortho-lo for years and have been fine with it. But i wasn't.

eventually i decided to try a new pill and a friend recommended i research Yasmin. i found many sights just like this one with women going on and on about how evil it was. for every good review, i read ten bad. but my doctor decided to try me on it anyway thinking i needed i higher level of hormones and the five months i was on it were horrible. severe weight gain, cramps (i never had them before), spotting, migraines, NO sex drive, etc. i went back to my doctor and she was surprised because both Yasmin and ortho-lo are supposed to be good drugs. bottom line is, they weren't good for me. she decided to switch me again, this time to a lower level of hormones, but with more active pills, trying to find the right balance for me.

now i read everyone saying horrible things about Loestrin but I have to tell you, i've been on it for a few months now and have never felt better. i didn't even have the months of 'adjusting' to a new pill. i think i may have finally found a combo pill that works for me.

all bcp pills have side effects and you can read horror stories everywhere about ALL kinds of pills. it DOESN'T mean the pill is horrible, or awful, or evil or the worst kind ever. it just means, that for whatever reason, its not right for you.

so if you are out there, reading comments like this on all these pills, please don't take all these comments to heart. read them, take heed, but don't dismiss a pill because it gets bad reviews. i've done my research and they ALL have bad reviews. You have to know that all pills have some side effects BUT each woman's body is different and just because some women experienced bad things on this pill, doesn't mean you will. we are all different after all. you can judge how you will react to something based on someone else's experience.

if you're looking to start taking bcp or looking to switch, be sure you know your own body, communicate with your doctor and know that somewhere you may be able to find a bcp that works for you. i'm lucky i found one in Loestrin.

Much Luck.

It is so funny to read all of the negativity but nothing positive! I came here looking for side effects and get a bashing about how horrid Yasmin/Yaz is! Let me first start off by listing my side effects that I wanted to know about:

breast tenderness
change in appetite
tiredness
red spot in eye

Next, let me tell you that I researched BEFORE taking this medicine because 1. I have MS 2. I suffer from migraines and seizures and 3. I take a whole boat load of medications! My doc recommended Yasmin for PMDD coupled with Sarafem to help my mood right before and during my time of the month. I must say that I have only been on it for about 10 days so I do not know anything of how it works with my period.

I am APPALLED at the fact that there are few, if any, positive comments about this pill! I know for a FACT that it works because I know 7 people personally that are on it that have NO PROBLEMS! So, I ask you all that have negative comments, what is wrong with you, other than you HATE the pill? What OTHER meds were you on while taking it? I read a few comments about stopping for a month and then starting again and then wondering why they felt like crap?? Well HELLO?! You are effing with your body's hormones! And there is a difference between Yaz and Yasmin hormones. If you had a bad experience with Yaz, make sure you are not confusing it with Yasmin! Yaz is a 24 day hormone pill where Yasmin is only 21 days.

I am not a doctor, but like I said, I have done my research. I have suffered with adult acne and PMDD for years. It sucks. If Yasmin helps, I want to know. I don't want to read a bunch of bull about people who mess up their cycles by taking the pill and smoking or taking the pill with meds they shouldn't be taking them with. I know what I can and cannot take. Most of what I take is natural and what is not, well, it CAN be taken with Yasmin. Like the website for Yasmin says and like most of the informational, non-biased websites say, Yasmin and Yaz is not for everyone. Some people cannot handle this type of hormone.

I can guarantee you that some doctor or pharm company can tell you that whatever symptom you are having is from something completely unrelated to the BC you are taking. Warnings are clearly marked...read them and obey!

I've had my Mirena in for about a month now, and honestly, it hasn't given me any problems. Of course I had cramps in the first week, and spotting for the first 3 months or whatever...but I can truly say that I love this birth control, and I hope not to get the negative side effects like most of these women. If you are considering the Mirena for birth control, talk with your doctor. If you have problems, talk with your doctor...if you're pissed off because you feel like you wasted your money, maybe you should take a second to think about it...neither you nor your doctor can look into a crystal ball to find out how something will effect you. But please, if you are considering the Mirena, don't decide against it because what a bunch of middle-aged women (with less than healthy reproductive systems) said. I'm 20 years old, and this IUD is a blessing.

I love this thing! I am now on my third month of being on the ring and could not be more satisfied. The only side effect i have experienced was a little burning around my vagina when i insert it and then again when i take it out. It has also made it so that i have no cramps prior to my period and my breasts are no longer tender to the touch during that time. I have read so many negative comments that i was scared to try it, but after switching from the dreaded once a day pill, i have never taken a better risk!

Hi ,
I am 16 years old and I'm taking Yasmin for a month without my mom knowing it.
She just found out that I was taking it so she got really pissed off .
And I hate to see her like that because it makes me really sad.
The first week I hadn't have any side effects but after reading all this it makes me scared.
Does it depend on the person or does it takes time to develop these side effects ?
PLEASE I NEED A REPLY ASAP !! :)
Because I need to know if I should stop it...

I just wanted to give an alternative perspective to the comments on this board.

I've been on Yaz for two months, and I'm very happy with it. The first week or so wasn't great: weird muscle aches, fatigue, lightheadedness occasionally. I had light brownish discharge/spotting for about a week. The second week I had some striking headaches, and over the first two weeks I lost 10 pounds (water weight).

But since then it's been smooth sailing. My period came exactly on time and lasted about 2.5 days. I no longer have any symptoms besides breast tenderness (akin to what my breasts felt like before my period, before).

So - keep in mind when you're reading these negative comments that usually the happy folks don't feel the need to post!

I was compelled to write this because of all the negative comments that have been posted. I believe the symptoms people are experiencing are real, but I also believe that they don't happen to every single person who takes Yasmine. People tend to speak out more on the negative than the positive, and that may be part of the reason there's so much bad feedback. I've been on it for two weeks now and haven't had a single side-effect...nothing. Although I wouldn't mind the bigger breasts side-effect. ;) I'm 37 and haven't been on birth control pills in probably 15 years. At the time I started taking this pill, I also quit smoking with the help of Chantix, and still no major mood swings, depression, decreased sex drive, etc. I have very acne prone skin, but it's been MUCH less oily since I started taking Yasmine. I've had some breakouts, but no large cysts. I also started using Retin-A about a month ago and believe the pimples I'm getting now are from that, not the Yasmine. Bottom line, everyone is different, and not all meds work for all people. I would encourage anyone who is concerned about starting Yasmine or wants to come off just because of comments posted here, to think twice and talk to their doctor.

I'm glad I came on this site.. My GYN gave me Femcon FE because he saw that I have a cyst on my left ovary. I hard horror stories about birth controls, like weight gain, acne, and nausea.. I am afraid of all three of those.
He told me to start taking them over the weekend and I asked him will there be any side effect and he told me that I would like the pill.. I just gave him a look and said I will be doing some research on this pill and if I read any stories about bad side effect I will not be taking them.
So thanks guys for your comments...
I WILL NOT BE TAKING THIS PILL..
I'll just wait for the cyst to disappear on it's own.

I am reading so many negative comments, but I really can't complain. I just did the 5th out of 6 shots to treat endometriosis and honestly, I truly believe it has worked. I don't have the pain that I used to have any more! I did start getting hot flashes and had trouble sleeping, but my doctor prescribed Norethindrone to take everyday and it has almost completely taken away the bad side effects. I think it just depends on the person-how their body will react.

Hi ladies, I have noticed that ortho tri cyclen lo isnt listed at this website so since so many of you have posted your negative comments on yasmin I figured I could ask you all if you have tried this other birth control and I would like to know anything good or bad that you have to say about it because I have been on yasmin for almost 2 years now and although It has not been troublesome at all to me I cant help but be concerned by the comments from you who say your troubles didnt start untill you took it for several years!! I do however notice sometimes bad headaches during the placebo week with yasmin and it seems worse than it was with 4 other birth controls Ive taken in the past. I cant help but wonder if ortho tri cyclen lo would help because the hormone level changes each week instead of being the same all month like with most pills. So before I go and make a switch I would like to know if anyone has tried it and how it affected you. Im not sure I want to stay on something that is gonna just make me feel worse in the long run and I end up feeling stupid that I didnt switch sooner! So please help me figure it out!! Thanks!! Kim

I am a 25 year old man who was diagnosed with ADD about a year ago. My Doc put me on adderall xr 10 mg one per day. We then upped to 20 mg, and then 30 mg. I must say the drug is wonderful! I only wish I was diagnosed and put on this when I was a kid. I never could concentrate or finish anything in school. I would hear words from people and teachers but they just did not register. I would drift from thought to thought but still hear the words. I truely belive that ADD has been a huge factor in me never finishing school and also loosing a long term relationship. In the relationship I had same thing. I would hear her speak, and want to listen but something literally would not let me!!! So, to her, i just was "Not wanting to listen". We broke up over it! Two years later I told my doctor about my concentration problems. Since being placed on Adderall this has disappeared. I can totally listen and concentrate. My life has totally been improved. I have been promoted twice at my job now since being diagnosed. The only side affects i have experienced so far is for the first 2 days a headache and yes i was restless. Its IS an amphetamine. That dissapeared in two to three days. Also, dry mouth is a problem. To me the benefits totally out weigh the side effects. To the parents of younger children or teens, this drug is widely abused. Please keep it away from them and only administer it to them by recommended dosage. I feel most of the negative comments on this drug are from the EFFECTS OF ABUSE!

People taking this drug for seizures are going to have very different experiences then the bipolars, I believe. Pretty much everyone has some weight gain, but not major (10-20lbs).
I was diagnosed as a rapid cycling bipolar, and before this drug, I was completely miserable. I was started on Depakote instead of Lithium due to fewer side effects, and it was a huge sucess.
Moods are stable, manic episodes are gone, sleep is stabilzed, libido is normal, depression is rare. I am 20 lbs heavier, happy, and "normal". I can't say enough good things about this drug.
Bipolars, steer away from the negative comments here and go to the bipolar support sites. You will find almost nothing but positive testimonials about this drug for our condition.

To Ellie,

Despite everyone's negative comments here, you must remember that girls have also had good feedback about Yasmin.

You won't know until you try. Perhaps this pill didn't work for the girls posting here but everyone has a different body.

Yasmin might be perfect for you, but then it might not. Everyone is different, don't go by what you read here.

I took Levaquin in April for a sinus infection that was pretty severe that the medicine worked and I don't remember major side effects. However, I have the sinue infection back in one ear, went to the dr. yesterday and she prescribed again 500mg for 10 days. I took the first pill last night and w/in a few hours was nauseated, my vision was blurring (thought it might be time to change contacts), did not sleep well and got up several times in the night to urinate (which is rare). I woke up feeling very achy and my right forearm, shoulder and neck were very sore. I thought maybe I slept on it wrong. Today I am nauseous, urinating frequently and having vision problems not to mention very lethargic at work. Not good. After seeing all the negative comments on this website I feel better that I'm not losing my mind and it is the Levaquin, which I plan on not taking anymore and will call my dr. for another alternative.

Yasmin has been a life saver for me. I am sorry to hear all these negative comments. But I lost 20 pounds, I have been more energized, my libido has stayed the same or increased dramatically, I had a high level of testosterone before taking it, now i am leveled out, yes, my breasts are tender but they are also a size bigger and lovely. I take it at night. The only thing i notice is that i am more edgy at times and i eat a bit at a time because if i eat a full meal like before i will get naseaus, but overall this pill has been the best! I hate Ortho. Ortho bloated me and made me crazy!! WHat every woman should know is that you should take a hormonal evaluation and see how they are, perhaps you have an estrogen imbalance and this is the reason you have all these crazy side effects when you add bcp's in your life. HIgh estrogen is the cause for depression many times, swelling, bloating, weight gain, etc... I went through a million doctors and had to self-diagnose many times and trust me in this world we must take our health in our hands before the doctors!
