I am so glad I found this website. I had Mirena inserted in May of 2008. Now I suffer from bad headaches that can last several days without much relief from Advil/Tylenol. I never really had headaches frequently and now I get them a couple time a month. They are usually on one side of my head and I can feel it behind my eye. It is throbbing? Do any of you have the same types of headaches? Do you think it could be the Mirena. I would hate to have it removed after spending $500 dollars, but I also don't want to continue with these terrible headaches. I have also noted that recently I have nausea. I am not pregnant but almost feel like I am. Has anyone also experienced this?

I am the husband to a wife that has Mirena. I married the sweetest,
greatest, prettiest, sexiest most unselfish angel of a woman back
in 2005. I had been in a miserable marriage for 11 years before.
Anyways soon after we were married, she got pregnant and we now
have a precious 2 yr old daughter (and a 10 yr old previous marriage).
6 months after our daughter was born, my wife got on Mirena (the devil pill). She has changed more than you can imagine. She's gained some weight, very moody, severe back pains, bleeding, depressed, absolutely no sex drive, tired, grumpy and just plain mean. She has been a huge part of helping my 10 yr old through lots of life changes (divorce, changing schools, etc) and he just loves her to death but she's been so mean to all of us for the past 14 months. She goes through spells and she'll be herself for a day or 2 then she's right back to the grump. She complained and complained about her back so I went and bought a $1200 mattress and it she still complains. We dated for 2 years and NEVER fought. We
had the best relationship ever but now, all we do is argue. Nothing I do
makes her happy. I'm miserable and I know she is too.
I've approached her about getting the Mirena removed and she talked
to her doctor and he told her that it wasn't the problem and she doesn't think that's the problem. I just wondered if there's anyone out there that can give me some advice on how to convince her to get that thing removed
before it ruins our family.

Hi. I had the mirena put in 8 weeks after my second son was born, that was Feb 26, 2008. Well I didnt feel a thing when it was placed, I felt just fine. The only thing that sucked was I was bleeding heavy every day for 4 months. Then I just started spotting the next 2 months. Then I just stoped bleeding all together. I tell you what Ihave been feeling pregnant ever since. I've taken 10 test and they all came out negative, but i still feel like it. I have my mood swings and i crampy. bloated, depressed, and heck im always tired. Also i have gain so much weight thats its disscussing. I dont even go out in public any more. Cuz when i do people will ask how far along i am and im not even pregnat. But thank god im getting this thing out jan 14th and i hope i start losing weight and get back healthy. Has anyone else can alot of weight with the mirena? I went all the way up to 210 and now im stuck at 190 i dont go past it thats. so hopefully i do when this is removed. Well let me now if anyone has the same problem.

My mother actually stumbled across this site and encouraged me to look into a possible connection between my severe joint pain and the Mirena IUD. I had the IUD inserted in July of 2007. For a few months following I experienced breakthrough bleeding but that did eventually end. I suffered from some mild bouts of depression and would completely fly off the handle at my two children. Always linked it to stress. My sex drive became nil. But no other real problems to complain of. But this past Nov (2008), I started having pain in my wrists and hands. I type all day so I assumed carpel tunnel. Then we began a kitchen remodel. After one particularly tough day of demolition, moving and climbing up and down stairs, I became really stiff and sore. Of course I didn't think much of it until a week later when the pain was getting worse, not better. After a few more weeks, the joint pain became so severe that I could not get up and down off the couch, off the toilet, out of the car, without wincing in pain. I felt 90 years old! My doctor had prescribed Naproxen (which wasn't helping at all) and gave me a course of Prednisone. The Prednisone made me feel like a million dollars. Problem is, you can't stay on it. That's when we found this site. I immediately called my OB/GYN and had the IUD removed 2 days later. Of course, doc didn't believe this could be the issue (Surprise, Surprise!). Once the course of Prednisone was over, the joint pain gradually came back, albeit not as bad as the first time. RA and Lupus panels were negative, no thyroid disorder, no diabetes. Going to see a Rheumatologist next month so we'll see. I can mention that I already see a difference in my moods. I feel more patient with my children lately and that alone was worth having the stupid IUD out.

honestly, i cannot believe my doctor even put recommended having the Mirena put in me! I put it in because it was my last option of not getting preggo. im 23 and have four kids. each of which was conceived on a different form of birth control. i got the mirena put in on nov 27th 2008 and i naturally started to bleed on nov 23rd. and ever since the 23rd i haven't stopped bleeding! the blood gets darker as if it will go away but then it gets red again and keeps going! and its not just blood its with lot of clots too! i've gained weight (which my doc said none of her patients on mirena have gained any and suggested i start to look at my diet and exercise more often). i was loosing weight just fine before i had the mirena put in! in three weeks i gained 10 lbs! i have massive migraines that wont go away, my sex drive has completely vanished, by back is always killing me and im very very moody with everyone. my husband just hates it and wants it removed already!

hi all. I have never taken these kinds of boards to heart before, but this time I am convinced. I had my mirena inserted 11 days ago and I am all ready to have it removed. It hurt when it was inserted, but I've had 4 natural deliveries, so I can tolerate a lot of pain. I was fine right after as far as cramping goes, but since having it inserted, I've constantly felt pregnant. Lower back aches, heavy bloated feeling, and the constant feeling of having a uti. That is the worst. I constantly feel like I have to pee and nothing comes out. But I go to the doctor and there is no bacteria in my urine. And now my hair is falling out. My gyn really pushed me towards this instead of having my tubes tied, that this worked better, but if I wanted to feel pregnant, I would just have another baby. I have an appt on Monday for him to check it. I may just have it removed and find another dr who will tie my tubes.

I have PCOS, and was experiencing dysplasia of the endometrium. After some search, a doctor recommended the Mirena. This was November of 2008. The installation should have been a clue of things to come. I have never had children, and had a tipped uterus, and as a result they had to use the clamps that look like needle nose pliers to grab my cervix, and after 45 minutes of stuffing, got it in. It was excruciating. I was working out 6 days a week, 2 1/2 hours a day, and eating South Beach Phase 2- and had lost 80 lbs and had maintained for 1 year. I asked if it would in any way cause weight gain, and was told it would not. Within the first month my diet/exercise regimen failed, and despite working out 7 days a week and resuming Phase 1, I was gaining 10 lbs a month- which my Doctor would not discuss with me except to dismiss it. To make a long story short, after life threatening edema and bleeding 22 or 23 days straight and with my now discovered sensitivity to progesterone, I required a total abdominal hysterectomy to remove an enlarged, boggy, and fibroid riddled uterus. I am doing 200% better now, and I am sure there are some women the Mirena works well for, but I was not one of them, and I feel the Mirena actually endangered my life (that and the arrogant doctor who inserted it and told me to be patient. I had it in from 11/2005 to 7/2007- is that time enough?) Please, please, please. If something does not feel right, do not NO for an answer. I did not want children so I was okay with losing the ability to bear children, but having a TAH at 38 is a life change that most younger women would not want. Would I have had to have it anyway? Perhaps. But I could have been in a position to be navigator in my care rather than reactive as I was forced to be.

Hey there,
I had my Mirena inserted a little over 2 months ago. The inserstion was pretty pain-free as the sister used local anesthetic.
Other than the severe cramps I felt that night, I must be honest that I have not experienced any of the painful side effects I've read about on all the forums I've found.
I spot here and there, but my periods are definitely lighter.
My sex-drive is through the roof! I had a high libido to begin with, so I'm not complaining.
The ONLY 2 negative side-effects I've experienced, are a little bit of acne on my chin, and hair loss. I'm hoping these will calm down though (as it states on the official Mirena website), but if not, I will most likely have it removed.
I had terminated a pregnancy one month before insertion, so I'm really just wanting to give my cervix a break which is why I don't want to have it removed unless I absolutely have to!
Is it possible to only experience these rare symptoms and none of the more common ones?
In Mirena's defence: has anyone ever read the side-effects of the birth control pills so many of us have used? It's become common to just accept the fact that we will most likely gain weight, get varicose veins, have headaches etc...
I suppose, nobody can feel what you're feeling, so if it doesn't work, change it.
I'm really hoping that mirena works for me, so if anyone has a positive experience, please share it!
All the best...

I have had my Mirena for 4 months now and I have also been miserable. I have been to my MD, tested for thyroid and diabetes. I went to my eye doctor because of weird vision problems. Weight gain even with exercise, bloated feeling, tired, hip and knee pain, back pain, hair loss...now I know it's all due to Mirena. I thought I was suffering from hypocondria since my doctor could not find anything wrong with me. I can't wait to have this removed, but at age 39 with 6 month old infant, I'm not sure what birth control method will be better.

I HAVE HAD THE MIRENA IN FOR 4 YRS NOW. I LOVE THE CONVENIENCE OF IT BUT I HAVE GAINED ALOT OF WEIGHT IN THE LAST 4 YEARS A TOTAL OF 50 LBS!!!!!! I HAVE BEEN READING THE INSERTS AND HAVE SEEN THAT SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE MENTIONED WEIGHT GAIN, AND I AM JUST WONDERING IF ANY ONE HAS SPOKE WITH A DOCTOR REGARDING THE WEIGHT GAIN?? WHEN I GOT THE CONTRACEPTIVE I WAS TOLD THAT THIS DIDNT CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN, BUT I AM WONDERING IF THAT WAS UNTRUE DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF WEIGHT THAT I HAVE GAINED. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME IF YOU HAVE EXPEREINCED THE SAME SIDE AFFECT. I AM ANXIOUS TO KNOW IF AFTER ANYONE GOT THIS TAKEN OUT IF THEY LOST WEIGHT RIGHT AWAY?? PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

I began having right hip pain a month after the mirena was inserted. I assumed it was from running. All the doctors I have seen for the past year stated I strained a muscle. They ordered MRI's and physical therapy. I have completed all, but still have the same hip pain-over a year now. Has anyone had hip pain due to the mirena? And did your hip pain stop completely after your mirena was removed? I am considering getting it removed. Although the doctors tell me they are not connected, I can't help but think there is a coincidence.

I actually posted my side effects (profuse, foul smelling discharge) before reading many of the posts here. I found my side effects to be common on other sites. I did want to mention that I thought the IUS (Mirena) was not to be used on women who ha not had a baby yet and I read here several women who have had it inserted before ever having a pregnancy! I'd check that out because Mirena literature itself would rule out a condidae based on that. Otherwise gals, my Mirena worked wonderfully--to virtually no pain or bleeding at insertion, to all but eliminating my period. However, I can't and won't live with the excessive foul discharge...CAN"T WAIT TIL 12/29 FOR REMOVAL!!!!!!

Quick update....Mirena inserted December 5, 2008. Have had no problems, no spotting or cramping at all. So far no hair loss, bloating or anything else. Will see if these things start up soon. Waiting for the 1st of January when "my monthly" should visit. I have found some positive posts on here that have helped me greatly. I hope this post is able to help someone.

Its been 3 months since I had Mirena inserted. I 've had periods in between periods. My husband is already sick of that part. But I wanted to know if the string is supposed to stay in the same place for the five years. Because during sex my husband said it wasn't there anymore. I'm wondering if my doctor cut my string to short. I know it didn't come out. If anyone could help me out. I would be grateful.

After reading all of these posts, I realize I'm not alone. Mirena was the perfect option for me because I'm very forgetful when it comes to medications. What sold me was when I was told it has a 99.9% effectiveness against getting pregnant. I was only told of the good things. After it was inserted i was in SEVERE pain from the cramping, it reminded me of labor contractions. I took 600mg of ibuprofen then layed down and cried myself to sleep. I got it July 28th, 2008. Since then I've been bleeding on and off but more bleeding than not. I get sharp, cramp-like pains in my lower stomach and sometimes vaginal area. I also suffer severe lower back pain. I was bleeding so bad at one point and it was very different from any period I'd ever had so I thought maybe I was miscarrying. I called the doctor and it was rather blown off and I actually got kind of laughed at, saying it's just your body adjusting. I have restless nights and wake up exhausted. I have those far out dreams like you do when you're pregnant, except I'm not. I also get bloated and uncomfortable at times. I've been bleeding now for almost a month straight. It comes and goes, which is very aggravating. I'd almost just thought about getting it taken out and just going with oral birth control that way I'd have a normal period but I love not having the boundaries in the bedroom. I'm giving it the 6months, like they told me it'd take and if all my symptoms are still present I'm considering removal.

I had the Mirena for a little over a year. While it was in my periods all lasted at least 2 weeks, and I started having terrible pain in my hips, to the point where it was painful to walk. I read online that joint pain is a side effect, so I had the Mirena removed. The pain went away within a couple months of removal, and my periods have returned to normal. Also, the strings hurt my husband during intercourse to the point where he didn't want to have sex.

I've been on Cymbalta now for about 2 months to treat terrible PMS and aches and pains from Fibromayagia, I am on 60 now and I must say it has made a HUGE difference, I am feeling much better and not as sore or moody. I had the Mirena removed because of it's terrible side effects and found that my migraines have lessoned and with the help of Cymbalta, I feel soooo much better and more myself.

I did a lot of research before having Mirena put in. I'm amazed at how many of these women are complaining about Mirena. First off I read up on different types of birth control. I decided to get Mirena because it seems the most effective. I met with 3 different doctors to make sure I was a good candidate for Mirena. I have never had kids which they said would make the insertion painful. When I had it put in it felt like a bad cramp, but it quickly went away. I had light cramps the 1st week, but knew it was normal.
I have read many of these posts and all the negative ones seem to be complaints for absurd reasons. First off, if your doctor does not know anything about mirena, they should not be putting it in. After insertion, you shouldn't have sex for at LEAST a week. The doctors in the U.S. are REQUIRED to tell you both the benefits and the side effects of Mirena. If you are experiencing any abnormalities such as loss of appetite or extreme depression you should be making an appointment to see your doctor not waiting YEARS to finally decide you need help.
Although this is not a side effect of Mirena I thought this post might be useful to others.

I had my Mirena inserted 6 weeks after I had my son (14 months ago) at the suggestion of my o.b. (she was using one also).... had I known then what I know now, my post partum birth control decision would have gone in a totally different direction! Insertion was very painful! Sex with my husband was awkward at first, mainly because he could feel the strings (they are wires!!!) poking him during deep insertion... After several weeks of getting used to the mirena, the nightmares started in! Sleepless nights, tossing, turning, dreaming about my fears and insecurities, and waking up sore... feeling like I had been run over by a truck! Moodiness and quick tempered feelings also came with the little devil... wanting to kill my husband and children over the littlest things like not eating all their dinner or not picking up their laundry...stupid stuff? My husband kept asking me why I was so angry, mean and hurtful...these are not traits I usually possess! I had become a bundle of tired, bitchy nerves! Then I had a trip to the emergency room, thought to be an appendicitis at first.....but no! I have a golf ball cyst on my right ovary, compliments of the mirena!! Now I have to have monitoring of this cyst until it bursts or is so painful I cant take it anymore and have to have it removed!!! Needless to say, I booked an appointment a few weeks ago and and have my mirena removed three days ago... I know it is going to take a while before I am "normal" and heal myself from this awful cyst, but I cant wait to love myself, husband and children again...if you are thinking of getting this inserted in your body, think again!!! Your doctors will not tell you what these women have experienced and gone through!!! Don't be a part of a class action suit down the line, money can't replace your health and well being :(

Well, Im so happy I read all these postings because I have been going crazy trying to figure out why I have gained so much weight and been so tired! I had my Mirena put in in early September, and I haven't had too much problem with bleeding after the first month, but the weight gain, tiredness, and acne has been terrible! My doctor said that she had talked with some reps. from Mirena and they assured her that the weight gain was NOT from Mirena, but I think thats a load of crap! I think Im going to make an appointment to speak with my doctor about taking this thing out!

I SERIOUSLY THOUGHT I WAS DYING. I have terrible pains which I thought was my kidneys and have had them checked several times. Intercourse became very painful for me. I have been to the emergency room repeatedly thinking I had a urinary tract infection or bladder infection. I have had constant soreness in my abdominal area. I have had major dental issues AFTER NOT HAVING A CAVITY IN 8 YEARS. I have been QUEEN super bitch to my kids and my man, God bless them for dealing with me for this long, they have been through HELL. My hair was already thin but now it's so thin I can't do much with it. Not to mention I became the laziest person ever. All I want to do is sleep. And I get upset over the smallest things and cry. My feet and knees feel like that of a 90 yr old. I had thought maybe there was a chance it was the MIRENA but the er reassured me it could not be my birth control. But after reading all of this it makes sense. I AM HAVING IT REMOVED ASAP. IM DONE!!!!!
