Gotta love the internet! I too have the Mirena IUD. It's been 2 to 3 months now and I have EXTREME PAIN IN BOTH KNEES AND RECENT ONSET OF BACK PAIN. I sit with a heating pad on my back every night and can barely walk. I talked to my gyn about the knee pain, and she said there's no correlation. I family md didn't make the connection either. I suspected it might be the iud because it's the only change I've made in my life since the onset of all this incredible pain. I'm making an appt to have it removed. Biggest mistake I've made all year! Thanks for all your input! I'm not crazy after all.

Hey there,
I had my Mirena inserted a little over 2 months ago. The inserstion was pretty pain-free as the sister used local anesthetic.
Other than the severe cramps I felt that night, I must be honest that I have not experienced any of the painful side effects I've read about on all the forums I've found.
I spot here and there, but my periods are definitely lighter.
My sex-drive is through the roof! I had a high libido to begin with, so I'm not complaining.
The ONLY 2 negative side-effects I've experienced, are a little bit of acne on my chin, and hair loss. I'm hoping these will calm down though (as it states on the official Mirena website), but if not, I will most likely have it removed.
I had terminated a pregnancy one month before insertion, so I'm really just wanting to give my cervix a break which is why I don't want to have it removed unless I absolutely have to!
Is it possible to only experience these rare symptoms and none of the more common ones?
In Mirena's defence: has anyone ever read the side-effects of the birth control pills so many of us have used? It's become common to just accept the fact that we will most likely gain weight, get varicose veins, have headaches etc...
I suppose, nobody can feel what you're feeling, so if it doesn't work, change it.
I'm really hoping that mirena works for me, so if anyone has a positive experience, please share it!
All the best...

I have had my Mirena for 4 months now and I have also been miserable. I have been to my MD, tested for thyroid and diabetes. I went to my eye doctor because of weird vision problems. Weight gain even with exercise, bloated feeling, tired, hip and knee pain, back pain, hair loss...now I know it's all due to Mirena. I thought I was suffering from hypocondria since my doctor could not find anything wrong with me. I can't wait to have this removed, but at age 39 with 6 month old infant, I'm not sure what birth control method will be better.

Hello, told my doctor today of leg cramps, facial rashes and numbness in feet....and specifically asked if they were related to Synthroid? He said no, I have been on it for 2months...and just upped script to .50mcg....and cramps are worse....I am going off the meds. I am in excellent health @ 64 and only went to this Doctor because of back pain.....was tested for a myriad of things...I had none of the symptoms for hypothyroidism.....what natural remedies are there for this . I just finished my first and now ONLY month of Yaz yesterday. After reading these boards I have found I am not crazy! Since taking yaz I have had more breakout, hair thinning, leg cramps, SEVERE constant headaches, abdominal pain, neck pain, back pain, no period at all, VERY low sex drive, exhaustion, blurred vision, very hard to drive also, anxiety, rage, depression, dizziness. Thats just off the top of my head!
I was put on this because I had abnormal uterine bleeding which had actually started to stop the day I was given yaz. But, I feel this pill will kill me before it will help me! I refuse to take it! Beware!

In desperate need for help! I started taking Loestrin24Fe 1mg/20mg and I didn't start taking it on the first day of my period,I took it before I got my period. My doctor recommended that I do that. I took one whole 24 pack and noticed I had server migraines, back pain and server nausea. I missed my period and haven't had it since Oct 27th,Today is Dec 16th.I started taking the birth control in November. I'm worried I may be pregnant but have no idea,I'm terribly worried and need advice. After the 24 pack,I stopped taking it. I've continued to have server migraines and now even painful chest pain. I feel like I'm always hungry and I'm always tired and moody. No breast tenderness but I do have really bad pain in my right breast area. If any one has advice on what I should do please contact me via email ******
I have no insurance and am scared!
Thanks a bunch,A.

I had the Mirena for over 5 yrs. I also had it for bad periods. I spotted constantly for the first couple of years but I left it in because I figured the annoying spotting was better than the alternatives (hysterectomy, ablation, etc) Finally, I was having some months with no bleeding for the rest of the time. What I didn't realize until after I was due to get it "switched" after the 5 yrs was up, was that I have been having so many of these side effects as everyone else. ( I stumbled across this and another site while looking for codes for the mirena to see if my new insurance would cover it). I have gerd, weight gain, back pain, UTI's, chest congestion, just to name a few. I always blamed it on me being overweight and getting older. One good thing about it was I didn't have pms anymore and I didn't feel so drained from the heavy periods. Oh yeah and I had INCREASED sex drive. I spoke with my doctor about how other women were complaining of the same side effects and she said she did not think it would cause all of that because only a little of the hormone gets into the bloodstream and it is less than the amount of bc pills. I decided not to have a new one put in right now and see if it was the Mirena that was causing me all of the extra problems. I had it out in September and I spotted for a week or so then I did not bleed for 1 month. I even went out and got a pregnancy test because I couldn't understand it. Then I started bleeding and it has been HORRIBLE. I have the most disgusting "period" I have ever had in my life. Not much pain though. I am still suffering and it has been over 1 month with no let up. I finally called the doctor's office and they want me to have another Mirena. I told them no. I do not want it. I do not know what I am going to do. I am waiting for some suggestion from my doc. I need some relief soon, though.

I had the Mirena put in at the end of May 2008... I noticed my weight was slowly going up then BAM between Aug. and Sept. i put on 30 pounds... my appetite is so big now I can eat and eat which doesn't help with the weight gain, and I use to workout but now I don't. I have 3 kids ages 15,14,and 9 and in the mornings I use to get up and make them breakfast now I'm tired all the time. I feel craps when I'm not on my period flutters in my stomach.. I feel so bloated. And very depressed about how I look and feel. Don't get me started on the mood swings and I never use to get head aches now they are often plus I'm getting achne which wasn't a big thing for me as a teenager so why now at 32 I am having it taken out tomorrow 12-10-08 and I pray that things will change for me, has anyone gotten yours out with good results, and if so how long before I can get back to the me before Mirena?

I had mirena put in one year ago. During that time I have had extreme back pain ( Feels like someone hit me with a bat in the kidneys) And a Cramping sensation on the right side radiating down my thigh. (It feels like a HOT knife being twisted in my side) I have also experienced hair loss, weigh gain, and no periods but I chalk most of that up to having a baby 13 months ago because they are common side effects to birth for me. Other side effects I have had--- my husband has become allergic to me. He gets a rash from intercourse. I read that one women was have allergenic reactions but has anyones spouse or partner had rashes? (No it is not an STD we all ready went to doctors they said it was a allergy reaction and they said if he can't get better that I may need to remove it)
Now my doctor is telling me that my progesterone and estrogen are low. Too low for a women of 31. Is this also a side effect or am I starting Menopause? I am nursing as well so that can account for the low estrogen but what about the Progesterone

I have been on Yasmin for about 5 years. I have never had an issue. I am worried that everyone on this site is making Yasmin look bad. You all need to remember that not everything will work for every person, everyones hormones are different to begin with so when you add the pill to these different levels of hormones you will get different side effects. To the people with low sex drive, did you perhaps think that this could be due to depression or the aging process? Many women suffer from low sex drive, those on and off the pill. Your sex drive will not be consistent throughout life, mine dropped in my early 20s and now is rising again, it may drop again, it can also be due to stress. All that said if you're suffering side effects that you think are attributed to Yasmin, or any other pill, stop taking it! Not everyone's body will handle it.

After 3 weeks on Fosamax, I had an attack of back pain that put me in bed for a couple of days. I wondered if it might be the Fosamax. I quit taking it for 2 weeks. I thought I would give it another try to see if it came back. This time after taking Fosamax for 3 weeks, my ankle is swollen and I am having gout like symptoms and feel achy like I have the flu. My podiatrist did some blood tests for gout. The results came back fine. Low uric acid levels. I do not have gout. He took a lot of fluid off of my ankle joint. The pain has been horrible. I am in athletic shape, working out at the gym 5 days a week, and bicycling. This has been torture. I am stopping the Fosamax. I had a horrible reaction to Lipitor a few years ago with pain from my knee into my back. I could hardly walk. I am the one that figured out what was up then and stopped the med.

To make a very long story short, I took this medication for 3 days for a sinus infection and misdiagnosed bronchitis. I was diagnosed on Friday with regional pain disorder. Has anyone else heard of this? My doctor is also saying I have a herniated disc and fractured tailbone, this was also news to me, no pain until after taking the Levaquin and the only back pain I have is leftover from EMC/ECV testing. Also when will the nausea go away? The pain medications seem to be helping with the insomnia, but now I have crazy dreams and just want to get off of this ride. Any help with this would be appreciated as I'm not sure how much more I can stand.

I got mine inserted in May of '08. After reading this I can now understand why I have been like this. My hair has fallen out, my face looks like a 13 year old, I bled for almost 5 months straight. I have been nauseous, irritable, tired, and super uncomfortable. Major back pain, abdomen pain, weak, and dizzy. I have a bad history of ovarian cysts and as a result only have about 1/2 of my right ovary. It feels as though my cysts have gotten worse, I can barely move. I called the Dr. and they are doing an ultrasound to see about the placement. I have been a basket case, I swear I was more stable as a pregnant person! I told the nurse that I was thinking of having it removed and she said that this is all normal for the first 2-4 months, hello its been 6!
Not recommending this to anyone, including my worst enemy, I have yet to see a shorter easier cycle and less cramps.

I'm writing in behalf of my 15 year old daughter who is trying loestrin24fe to get some relief from her back pain and migraine headaches (which she inherited from me). She had a full period after just 10 days and has had a non-stop headache since starting this pill that won't stop even with her migraine medicine. I know it takes time for bodies to adjust, each is different and the doctor says give it 3 months- but she is considering just stopping because her headaches are so bad. I'm just not sure she can hold out for 2 and a half more months to give it a good try. Her acne is a lot worse too. Moody- yes, this was another thing we were hoping the pill would help with but hasn't. I'm sure this site is biased for people having problems since if it's working okay- why look up information on it? In any case, 30 years ago the lowest dose pill made me depressed, I barely made the 3 month mark before I stopped and I thought it would be different now. I have spent years before and after having kids using an IUD, and for me, that has always been the greatest birth control!

My experience with Yasmin was very similar to the one posted by "vpompon19" on October 26th 2007.
I took Yasmin for only a month. The day after I started, I had those symptoms:
- Nausea that last day and night
- Complete loss of appetite.
- Extreme fatigue
- Sleeping over 8 hours and still feeling tired
- Brain fog - inability to concentrate on anything
- Irritability
- Hypersensibility - I would cry for nothing...
- Feeling extremely nervous and nauseous when I had only half a green tea!
- Heartburn (I suffer from acid reflux but it was almost gone until I started Yasmin)
- Depression
When i stopped, I had the most painful period I've had for at least 8 years.
Plus I immediately started an urinary tract infection (which I never had before).
Two weeks later I experienced unbearable back pain. The doctor told me I had a herniated disk but I didn't force or had any trauma so I was sceptical. It turned out to be mononucleosis!
So thank you not Yasmin for having wasting at least 2 months of my life (so far), not mentioning the fear I had a more serious disease... No more birth control pill for me ever. I took another brand (Marvelon) for 7 years, then I stopped one year and my Irritable Bowel Syndrome disappeared. But my acne came back (even though I took Accutane when I was 15 - which I'm sure is the cause of my uncontrollable acid reflux).
I found out there are natural, safer and cheaper contraceptive methods. Don't wait until your doctor or the education system tell you about them because you'll be dead already.

i got mirena 2 weeks ago, since then i've experienced all the side effects..the worst is i've become so depressed that my fiance' is scared to death i'm going to hurt myself...my depression is broken up by periods of extreme anxiety..i'm afraid this is destroying my relationship..i am normally a happy person who likes to have fun and now all i do is cry and scream at people for no reason...and sometimes i have to fight hard to keep it from getting physical. I am now in the process of getting it removed because the mood swings are scaring me..not to count all the back pain, acne....and i work out and keep gaining weight..my fiance' and i are now looking into other forms of contraceptive....if anyone has any hints as to how to get over this or what else may work...please email me ****** any advice is welcome.

Well, I have had my Mirena since June/08. I had my son in May/08. I was 7 weeks pp when I had it put in. After my son was born I felt ok, no pains besides my c section scar
NOW...since insertion I have had a mess of problems. I have been a healthy woman for a long time and never had issues like this until July-ish. I am 27.
1. I had horrible back pain and my legs felt like I walked in 7" heels the night before (the tight muscle cramps, etc). My PCP told me I could possibly have a slipped disc and wanted me to go to PT. I had all my blood work come back fine btw. Since I knew in my heart I didn't have a slipped disc I did not waste my money on PT.
2. I have NO sex drive. The thought of sex makes me gag. No joke. I had sex 6 weeks pp and had a libido with no sleep. My son sleeps 11 hrs a night and I still don't want sex. As I type, I could go the rest of my life with no sex. THAT IS NOT ME AT ALL!
3. Extreme tiredness. Like I said my son sleeps 11 hrs a night and I sleep 8 hrs a night.
4. Light-headedness- I do have a BP of 110/70 so if I get up fast I get dizzy, but more now than before.
5. Started to have SEVERE pelvic pain right above my c section scar. It hurt so bad I was about to go to the ER. I was home alone with my 6 mo old so I tried to wait it out. I called my OB and they got me in. In his exam he felt a huge knot in my pelvis and it hurt like a MF! He suspected a hernia so he sent me for a CT scan.
Got the results yesterday and they came back normal. He said maybe I bruised something. But why do I have a big knot in my pelvis?
I feel like I am crazy. My bf takes my pain issues with a grain of salt now days. My OB did say since there is progesterone in the Mirena that my leg issues could be from Mirena and he was more than happy to remove if I wanted.
I still have it in and more and more I am thinking of getting it removed. My issue is I am so bad at taking pills and didn't like the Depo.
Anyways ladies...please let me know if you have had these issues. My email is arizonaequine@yahoo.com
Hope this can help someone feel less crazy!!

I had mine removed last month and still enjoying the NEW ME! I am so happy and cheerful now without the back pain and achy joints and anxiety attacks. Still getting rid of acne, chin hair and 40 lbs but WOW I am so grateful I found this site to validate that I wasn't losing my mind. There seems to be 1% of the population who have no problems at all with this IUD but for the other 99% of us ... BE CAREFUL and REMOVE IT ASAP! By the way, I still have not had a cycle since the 2 days of spotting after it was removed ... and the removal pain is ZERO compared to the insertion. I am also changing to a female holistic obgyn since my male doc refused to acknowledge my valid side effects - ARGH!!!

Hello Ladies. I was a mirena SUFFERER for 3 1/2 years. Had all the symptoms including hair loss. Terrible drug. Had it removed in sept 2008. Just a heads up girls, If you dont want kids get another form of bc right away. I am now 5 weeks pregnant again. LOL we did try the vasectomy route for my husband so you can imagine our surprise when we got the news. LOL Mirena was the worst thing to ever happen to me and my family but there is light. After almost two months my hair loss is down and my acne is almost gone. Joint and back pain gone. Mood so much better i feel like a new person. And you can get pregnant again.LOL So chin up girls. Always listen to your body and decide for yourself, but for me getting it removed was the only answer. HOWEVER, one note. After removal the risk of ectopic preg is much higher for the first year. Be careful and if you do turn up prego again make sure you discuss with your ob/gyn and get an ultrasound as soon as possible to be sure of location of the fetus. Good luck ladies.

I am 34 years old and was prescribed Advair about two years ago. I have had minor asthma issues over the years but nothing major. So the doctor gave me an inhaler. Then one winter I get sick and started going through the inhaler in about a month, so he prescribed Advair.
-- By jasonchico | Reply | Private Message meTo back up I had lower back surgery for a bulged disc. So I had a lot of pain and was taking vicodin. Six months after surgery my back started feeling better than it had for a long time. I was able to exercise and get by with one vicodin in the morning. This went on for about a year. The pain was stable for the most part, but would increase every now and then.
Now enters the Advair. When I first started taking it I felt a little weird but it made my breathing a lot better. After a little while I would forget to take it or just feel like I didn't need it. But I could not stop taking it because my breathing got to bad without it. Over time my pain was getting worse and worse. I ended up being put on time release morphine because we thought the back pain was increasing. Then after being on morphine it seemed like I was always sick. I have been to the hospital twice for breathing and lung infections. I thought my back pain was turning into sciatica!!!! All along it is this F@#$ ADVAIR!!!! I have had a super short temper, daily head ache's,depression, HORRIBLE PAIN in my legs and back. I am so glad I found this site. ADVAIR IS EVIL!!!!! I have stopped taking it for two days now. I really need help from anyone who has info about quitting it. PLEASE CONTACT ME. Thanks : )
