I had my mirena inserted in March of 2008, after talking to two different doctors and doing a lot of research about my options. I had been on the pill but was really irregular about taking it (which renders it almost worthless). Next I used Nuvaring--a GODSEND when I was in college! I never had to worry about timing and just sent for another three month supply through the mail. I decided to get Mirena when I knew my insurance would end when I graduated. I and 23, and have been in a monogamous relationship for six years which means my risk of contracting an STD which would lead to PID (which can be very very serious when you have an IUD, and the IUD makes it easier to develop PID) is low. My docs also told me the reason they usually only like to insert Mirena into women who have had children is these women's cervixes aren't as tight and closed as a woman, like myself, who has never had kids. This didn't effect insertion for me--it was a breeze after a few ibuprofen.
I've had my Mirena for over 8 months now, and after the first 3 months or so my cramps (which were in my lower back and were very sharp) and my bleeding (which lasted about a month) were gone. I had periods for a few more months..but I have been COMPLETELY period/cramps/bloating/mood swing free for the past 4 months. I'm very happy about Mirena! A little acne, but NOT a big deal. Please remember these posts are almost all by women who have had bad experiences...What about those of us who have had good experiences? Mirena, like any hormonal contraceptive, effects different women in different ways.

I had the Mirena inserted approximately two weeks ago and I really wish I would have read this website first! The pain on insertion was probably one of the worst pains I have ever had but the cramps a few hours later were worse, I was stuck on the couch crying for the rest of the afternoon, just to put it in perspective I broke my ankle and that pain was nothing compared to this. I have had spotting since putting it in and my sex drive is at negative numbers and I am only 23 years old. So far the only side effects have been moodiness, severe cramps, spotting, and the shits. I am freaking out though after reading the posts on this website..I feel totally trapped by this thing and I don't want to gain a bunch of weight and be a moody bitch for the next 5 years. Is there any hope the mood swings will go away and I will want to have sex again?

I am 23 years old and I was prescribed Levaquin 500mg for three days to treat a urinary track infection. Immediately after I drank the first dose my nose got very stuffy and it was hard for me to breath; my head felt heavy and body as well, I was afraid to go to bed. Then, I started to feel my joints a bit weak and my right knee ached. Today, a month after I drank this pill my right knee still aches and feels weak. I am so afraid I might have done damage to my body for just three days of drinking this drug. If my doctor would have told me this I would have NEVER drank it. Plus, after my treatment I still had the UTI.

I have had a mirena before it was okay the first time besides that i couldn't lose my pregnancy weight. I have one now and it is worse than ever. I weighed 120 lbs back June when I got the mirena for a second time. I now weigh 156 lbs concedering I'm only 5'3. I have tried asking my doctor several time if that is normal. They have continued telling me that it has nothing to do with mirena. They claim my metabolism has slowed down. I am 23 years old and have never had weight problems. I am so glad that I have found this web site because I have been super depressed about this. It is terrible to gain weight and go up 2 pants sizes in just a few months. I have even tried exercise like the doc ordered and it isn't helping. I have had massive headaches. I can't concentrate on anything when they come. I even experience foggy vision. I have a sex drive but I loss it easily. I can be so ready and then just something as simple as a cough will just take it all away.the only good thing about this so far is that I have no period and craps are down to a minimal.

I am 23 years old. I was prescribed Levaquin 750mg for a uti. I took my first pill at 3:00pm yesterday. That night, I wasn't able to sleep. I layed in bed, so tired, just wanting to fall asleep but couldn't. Then the cold sweats and trouble breathing started. By 2:00 a.m. I was having what I can only describe as a panic attack. It's 1:00pm the next day, and i've never felt this bad. THIS MEDICINE IS NOT GOOD.

Hello,
I am 23 years old and I have been on Jasmin for 8 days now. After the seventh day of using the pill, my right breast became very swollen and on the outside I have 3 lumps which i never had prior to the pill. Aside from that, under my right arm I got a swollen ball (seems to be a lymph node) and a sore right arm, which I never had before.( I am always examining my breasts and under arms on a regular basis). Therefore, I went to the doctor and they told me that is because of the hormones and its my choice whether I stop the pill or not. Apparently if you stop the pill without finishing the pack you will have a messed up period for a few months. I believe that this pill might work for some people but at the same time doctors should be more careful with what they are prescribing.

When my bp, which had always been VERY low, rather suddenly skyrocketed at age 48 (possibly as a long-term effect of the preeclampsia I had 23 years ago when pregnant with my daughter), I was put on 10 mg of Lisinopril. I had diarrhea by that evening. The next day, the diarrhea thankfully disappeared, but other flu-like symptoms set in--mostly nausea and muscle weakness/fatigue. The nausea often made it hard to eat, and the muscle weakness was so bad that sometimes I'd have to stop what I was doing---even typing on the computer--and go lie down. Fortunately, these symptoms abated after one week, and I've been fine for the last two weeks. But now, as my bp is still too high, my Lisinopril is being increased to 20 mg, so I fear getting sick again.

My daughter is 15 and on Thursday June 5, 2008 she received her second shot of Gardasil. A couple of hours later she complained of difficulty breathing. I took her to the ER where the doctors made me feel like I was crazy to think it was a reaction to the Gardasil shot. They said she might have asthma. They gave her a Nebulizer treatment that didn't help and sent her home with a prescription for Albuterol which too did not help. I took her in to see her Primary care doctor who said the same thing, it could not be the shot and diagnosed her with Bronchitis. She has no signs of bronchitis, no wheezing, cough or phlem. I then took her to see an allergist who again said the same thing, not the shot. He to said she may have bronchitis. They have given her 4 types of medication and none of them have helped. Today is day 10 and she continues to have difficulty breathing. Is there anyone else out there with these same symptoms?? If so I would really appreciate and advise you can give..

I stopped smoking the third day into the first week. I'm in week two now, and have had half a cig a couple of times...but it doesn't taste good or do a thing for me. My cravings are minimum, no mood swings...don't even want to drink! (I haven't even finished a beer since I started.)
My side effects have been slight nausea even when I eat before taking; severe joint pain; insomnia; exhaustion, intestinal distress. I'm willing to put up with this for a few more weeks, but I may do as others have suggested and cut back to one pill a day by week three.
I quit 23 years ago and then, like a fool, started smoking again. The first time I quit I used hypnotism. I paid for five sessions and only used four. Worked like a charm...but soon after, I plunged into a severe clinical depression. It wasn't until years later that I connected nicotine withdrawal to depression. So, I'll be very careful this time around...it's taking a lot of guts for me to risk going through another bout of depression.

I'm 23 years old and I took Yasmin for about 4 or 5 years. I honestly loved it at the time, or so I thought. Basically, I got switched to Yaz because it was being pushed by my doctor's office and within 2 weeks I was the most miserable person on the face of the earth. Since I was going through a lot in my life I never even thought that my negative attitude was based on my birth control. I began to suffer from severe migraines, nausea, this strange rash on my face, and I gained a little over 20 pounds. I was on Yaz for 6 months when I finally realized that it was what was causing all my symptoms. The Sunday before my appointment, things got so bad that I was about 30 seconds away from killing myself or checking myself into an institution. I have since switched to Loestrin24Fe, and I can't say I'm in love with it, but I DO feel SO much better! Seems to have a few side effects of it's own, but as long as "killing myself" isn't one of them, sounds good to me! Despite thinking that Yasmin was great back then, I started to think back to when I felt my life had started to spiral out of control, and it's when I started the Yasmin. My migraines and over all aches, pains, and anxiety problems started then too! The 2 best years I had were 2 years I wasn't really actively using birth control. My last two relationships have ended in a fiery ball of flames due to the control Yasmin and Yaz have had over me. THIS PILL NEEDS TO BE OFF THE MARKET. It has ruined my life for the past 3 years especially and I can't believe that despite all of us screaming at the top of our lungs, no one is doing anything. All the drug reps keep saying "there's no "bad" pill everyone reacts differently" but HOW can you say that when so many women are this miserable on it? Do countless numbers of us need to die in order for this to be over?

I have read many posts about Adderall XR side effects, and wondered if anyone has found another medicine that works better for them. My 12 year old daughter is taking 20mg/day of Adderall XR. It definitely helps her tremendously in focusing at school, but the side effects are just too much. (she has huge mood swings, verbal tics, compulsive hair plucking, etc.) We need an alternative ASAP. If you have something else that you recommend, please let me know. Thanks!

I am 23 years old and I have never used a birth control besides NR which I have been on for 2 years. My first few weeks of being on it were almost disastrous. I was having symptoms of a UTI, but Planned Parent Hood told me that my tests were not showing that I had any infection. They offered to treat me with a generic antibiotic for UTI, but I didn't want to use antibiotics if I didn't need to. I asked them if my symptoms could have anything to do with the NR, they said impossible. A week later I was in the hospital with a UTI and kidney infection. It took me weeks of best rest and 3 antibiotics to be well again. The first antibiotic they put me on had no effect on me at all, but they made me keep taking it once I started. I discovered by myself that my UTI and my kidney infection were due to a tiny piece of lint that had gotten stuck to my Nuva Ring. The bacteria on it had climbed up the uretha and turned into a kidney infection. None of the doctors even thought to have me check if something like that could be the source of the infection. I was told that if I had waited any longer to come into the hospital that my kidney's would have failed/collapsed. I had E. coli and another bacteria growing in my kidney's. It took me weeks of best rest and 3 antibiotics to be well again. If you are on the NR, please take it out after sex and examine it and rinse it off. Bacteria will cling to it!
Other than that experience I have noticed many side effects mentioned by others here: random moodiness, fits of crying coming out of no where, PMS symptoms can be two weeks long for me, increased irritability with my boyfriend, massive amounts of white lumpy discharge all month long, itchiness, multiple UTIs, bacterial vaginitus, random painful stabbing sensation in the vaginal area, increased dryness during sex, major lack of sex drive, painful breasts (which have increased in size, not complaining there), extreme swelling of the vaginal walls during and after sex. No matter how much precaution I take with cleanliness before and after sex this will randomly occur. There is so much swelling some times that wearing loose cotton underwear even hurts with all of the sensitive skin exposed. Walking really hurts! The cost of the Nuva Ring is also a problem. My insurance doesn't cover birth control and it costs me $60 a month to get the NR.
I am strongly considering going off of it. I do like the fact that I do not have to worry about taking pills or getting shots. In that sense this is a great alternative! I also only bleed for 3 days with a little spotting on the 4th day. I do not have cramps. I really like the idea that this is a low dosage of hormones localized right where it will be most effective, but I am getting concerned about what it may do to my body long term.
There is new research coming out that shows that our brain's ability to sense pheromones (which are nature's way of telling us if some one is a good match for us or not), is altered when we use birth control and that this can lead women to fall in love with some one that may not be a good genetic match for a mate. In the larger scheme of things this means that children coming from these couples may have weaker genetics. Very disturbing.

I just heard about this from my mom this morning. I've been on Singulair for 4 years for allergies. I'm 23 years old. Over the last several years I have had many nights that I went without sleep. I have gotten severely depressed and on the rare occasion that I drink more than a couple drinks, I have had insane mood swings. I have had horrible anxiety and I have gone from an honors to student to being on academic probation.
It has really helped with my allergies, but I had gone through hell the last few years and I've been borderline suicidal for a period.

So I've been on Yaz for over 4 months now. I'm 23 years old and have never had bc before (don't need it) My GYN put me on this pill to prevent another ovarian cyst rupture. (i was hospitalized in Dec because i had a 4cm cyst on my ovary that filled with blood and ruptured. Very painful!!) so like i said, i am taking this to prevent that again since Yaz stops ovulation.
The first month was pretty rough. (like i expected) Extreme mood swings, very tender breasts, headaches, slight nausea, and my preiod was a week and a half late then lasted for 16 days and was VERY heavy.
Onto month 2: Same mood swings, breasts still extremely tender, reduced amount of headaches and my period came on the 3 placebo day and was VERY light this time lasting only a day and a half.
Month 3: No more mood swings, breasts no longer tender although bigger in size, Extreme nausea but only lasted for 4 days, and this time my period was more normal ( lasting about 5 days and not too heavy or light).
On my 4th month, things seem to be normal. GYN says i lost some weight from Yaz even though it has made me feel bloated so i thought i had gained weight. Weird. But my period seems to be on a timed clock now coming every 3rd placebo.
So like the GYN's tell you, It takes up to 3 months for your body to get used to the hormones being added to your body. Expect some side effects for a while. Everyone is different but for me the side effects diminished after the 3rd month. Hope this helps. :D

I am on 10 mg. of paxil and have been on it for about 4-5 years. I would like to come off but am worried about all these crazy withdrawal symptoms everyone talks about. I have gone as many as 3 nights without takiing any and never experienced "jolts", maybe a little jittery and confused. I am thinking about doing 7.5 mg. for about a month, then go down to 5 for a month, then 2.5 for a month.
I hear all these stories and wonder if the people who have all these bad withdrawls were on high does and if they weaned themselves off.
PLEASE HELP.
Thanks.

This is my 3rd day on Bactrim. The side effects are horrible. I am taking 1 pill 2x per day for an ear infection. I am experiencing extreme fatigue, gastrointestinal upset, agitation and insomnia. I don't know how much longer I can put up with these side effects. I feel like staying in bed all day and just taking a shower and getting dressed makes me exhausted. I am 23 years old and thought I was really sick, so I ran a search on Bactrim. I would not recommend this drug to people. Ask your doctor for something else instead. The side effects with this drug are pretty bad.

I am 23 years old and 1-11-08 made one full year with the Mirena. In October of 2006 I had a miscarriage, so in January 07 my doc inserted the Mirena. For the first 6 months every single day I had a light period. My doctor told me it was normal and to give it time. I started having stomach pains daily, mood swings. For some reason the right side of my stomach is hurting around my ovaries. I had my doctor schedule an ultrasound. (I am waiting on results) The pain was so bad to where I just stayed home. I would always be in pain, either back or stomach. I lost my sex drive from constantly having some type of discharge. I'm only 23 this is not normal! When ever I did the next day I would be in extreme pain. I gained 35 pounds mostly around my stomach. I have no energy and its hard to sleep. I even started to get depressed because no doctor could tell me what was happening. I didn't want to go thru the pain of a miscarriage so I put up with the pain daily. I can't take it anymore and after two years to see if this would work I am having it removed. I told every female I know not to get this, and my BFF did anyway and is now going thru the same thing. I had never been on BC before and don't think I will try again. This was very bad on my relationship of 3 years. I should let my boyfriend write his experience with it from the outside looking in. He was the one that had to deal with it for a year.

Hello. I am 23 years old. On December 1st I suffered a miscarriage. After going through that horrible ordeal, my fiance and I decided to wait and not have kids yet. I had the Mirena inserted on January 10th. The pain was horrible, and the next few days I was really sore. I started my period on the 24th of this month, nothing special to note, except it is longer than I am use too. What I have noticed is a sharp pain in my left side. It will not go away. I have called the doctor and scheduled an ultrasound. Hoping that turns out fine. My side effects that I have noticed are breast enlargement, ( I went up two sizes), and anxiety. I was going to go to the doctor for that, but now am considering just having the iud removed. I just wander how many other people are going though the same thing.

Dear reader I write this as a warning and as a way to seek help. I was put on Desogen when I was 23 years old. I was on this drug to control my periods. I suffered all of the side-effects. During my first year on this pill I fractured my foot.
Why mention my foot, because hormones effect our bones as well as everything else. During my second year I lose the hair on the right side on my head. Told this to my Gyn doctor and I was enored. All the while I suffering depression, insomnia, mood swings, weight gaine, and scalp hair loss.
Buy the fourth year on Desogen I changed my doctor. Who later put me on Loestrin. This wasn't any better I was now suffering night sweats along with everything else. While on all these hormones I was also taking high blood pressure medications which only made matters worse.
All in told I have been on hormones for six years. How I stopped was by accident. Meantime I was also taking pain killers for my foot which now had been broken for five years.
After coming off all these hormones my body when though an over haul. First thing was the lost off sexual function, then there was the loss of pubic hair, the shrinkage of my right breast and right buttocks, I had surgary on my left breast to remove a precanerous lump, and now just recently I have notice the shrinkage of my righ arm.
There's alot more to tell. If any doctor comes accross this article please reply. I need all the help I can get.

I have had the Mirena since June of 2004. That would make it three years. I have never had any problems with it up until two or three months ago. I went from 150 pounds to almost 170 pounds. I am a mother of two children and I am 23 years old. I skipped two periods before I had one last month. I have had MAJOR weight gain and a LOT of stomach pain. Everytime I eat, I blow up like a balloon. I HATE it. I can feel myself slowly becoming depressed. I am glad that I researched this because now I can go and get this situation under control. And maybe even get my sex drive back. I never would have had this inserted three years ago if I knew all the pain it was going to cause me now. Thank you for putting this site up.

I'm so glad I googled side effects of Yasmin and found this site. All of the sudden my mood swings for the past almost YEAR make sense. I started out fine. The pill was great, and I haven't had to worry about acne at all. Of course I gained a few pounds, but not too much. However, I'm a pre medical student trying to study for the MCAT this summer. I've been SO tired and drained and majorly depressed that I just can't seem to concentrate. I feel like I'm always crying over the stupidest stuff (AKA: no reason at ALL), and my grades are starting to suffer. Hopefully now that I've read this, I can stop taking this pill and see an improvement. It's just not worth the depression. I'm 22 right now, and until recently had never had a suicidal thought. I was starting to panic, because I couldn't identify the cause of my depression. I'm a good student, have lots of friends, and have the most amazing boyfriend and family. Life is good, I shouldn't feel this bad. Now that I have a clue as to what this may be, I can fix it.

I'm 23 years old, and a mother of 2 children under 2. I had my Mirena placed in September 2008. Since the placement, i have had extreme bleeding and clotting for 20 days straight in the beginning. my doctor said that was normal and that it would subside, which it did, but i was still having the abnormal bleeding throughout. That wasn't a concern for me, it started with the strange pains that i would get, it felt as if something sharp was poking my insides, my boyfriend also would feel it during intercourse, and at times it would be so painful for him we had to stop. That has ruined our sex life. Just recently i have developed lower back pains and didn't know where it was coming from, i thought maybe because I'm constantly picking up my 7 month son who weighs as much as his sister who is 2. But then the depression started kicking in. I feel so lost. I cry out of no where, and I'm always tired, and have no motivation, or desire to care. I feel like everything is falling down around me, and i have no control over it. I snap out of no where with anger. I'm a stay at home mother, and i feel trapped every day. i love my kids, but lately i feel like I've lost who i am, and it's effecting my relationship with my children, not only that but with their father. i feel myself distancing myself from him. I don't really have anyone to talk to about anything, and sometimes i just wanna run away from everything in my life. i used to be such a fun person, always laughing and happy, but now i feel like I'm not me, like I've changed completely. i thought i was loosing my mind until i thought maybe this is all a side effect from Mirena? My doctor did not warn me of this so i wasn't sure until i found this website. I can't believe everyone is experiencing the same thing! as of now i don't have medical insurance, and i want this thing removed! I'm in the process of getting insurance so i just hope that i can cope with this a little longer, because i feel like I'm gonna lose myself entirely
