Ambien Chemical Information

zolpidem tartrate - The tartrate salt form of zolpidem, an imidazopyridine derivative with sedative-hypnotic property. Zolpidem, a non-benzodiazepine compound, selectively binds to the omega-1 subclass of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type A receptor, a chloride ionophore complex in the brain. This leads to the opening of chloride channels causing hyperpolarization and inhibition of neuronal firing, and mimicking synaptic actions of GABA.
